Adobe: AI retail traffic up 130% this holiday, $275.1B online

Adobe forecasts $275.1B in US online holiday sales and a 130% jump in AI-referred retail traffic. Here is what to instrument before Thanksgiving.

Adobe published its 2026 holiday forecast today, and the headline for anyone running an online store is not the total. It is the referrer mix. Adobe expects AI traffic to US retail sites to rise 130% year over year between November 1 and December 31, against total online sales of $275.1 billion, up 6.7%. Your fastest-growing channel this holiday is a channel most small merchants are not measuring separately.

What actually happened

Adobe's forecast is built on Adobe Analytics data: more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites, 100 million SKUs, 18 product categories. It projects $275.1 billion in US online sales for the Nov. 1 – Dec. 31 window, a 6.7% increase. Cyber Week lands at $47.5 billion (up 7.4%), with Cyber Monday at $15.1 billion (up 6.2%), Black Friday at $12.9 billion (up 9.2%), and Thanksgiving at $6.9 billion (up 8.5%).

The AI numbers are not evenly spread. Adobe expects AI-referred traffic — a shopper clicking through from an AI interface — to rise 130% overall, but 159% on Thanksgiving, 95% on Black Friday, and 88% on Cyber Monday. The skew matters: the day with the lowest absolute sales gets the biggest AI lift, which is what a research channel looks like before it becomes a transaction channel.

Adobe also surveyed 5,000 consumers. Among those who have used AI for online shopping, 77% said they felt more confident in the purchase and 69% said they were less likely to return the item. Buy now, pay later is forecast at $21.3 billion (up 6.6%), and Adobe expects 63% of Thanksgiving spend to happen on mobile — a record.

Why AI retail traffic matters for your store

A 130% increase on a small base is still a small base. Do not rebuild your storefront around it. Do make it countable, because the second-order numbers are the ones that pay: if AI-referred buyers really do return 69% less often, that cohort has a materially different contribution margin than paid social, and you cannot see it if AI referrals are dumped into direct or "other" in your analytics.

Three things to do before Thanksgiving. First, split AI referrers out of your traffic reporting — referrer host and UTM rules for the major assistants, reviewed weekly, with returns and refunds joined in so you are measuring contribution and not sessions. Second, curl your own product pages and read what comes back with no JavaScript: price, currency, per-variant availability, shipping cost, and returns policy in structured markup, because that is the surface an assistant reads before it decides to cite you. Third, staff Thanksgiving. If AI referrals jump 159% on the day your team is at dinner, your slowest response window is your fastest-growing one.

Key takeaways

  • Adobe forecasts $275.1B in US online holiday sales, Nov. 1 – Dec. 31, up 6.7% year over year
  • AI-referred retail traffic is forecast up 130% overall, 159% on Thanksgiving, 95% on Black Friday, 88% on Cyber Monday
  • Cyber Week: $47.5B total, with Cyber Monday $15.1B, Black Friday $12.9B, Thanksgiving $6.9B
  • Of surveyed shoppers who used AI, 77% felt more confident buying and 69% said they were less likely to return the item
  • 63% of Thanksgiving spend is expected on mobile; BNPL at $21.3B, up 6.6%
  • Segment AI referrals in analytics and join returns data to them, or the cohort's real margin stays invisible

You cannot price a channel you are not counting. We instrument AI referral traffic as its own channel — referrer rules, per-variant product markup, and returns joined back to source — so you know what an assistant-referred order is actually worth before Cyber Week, not in January. Run the margin math, or send us a product URL and we'll show you what an assistant reads.
