Agentic AI Foundation hits 247 members: Visa, Wells Fargo join
The Agentic AI Foundation added 57 members and now governs MCP, goose, AGENTS.md and agentgateway. Neutral governance is what makes agent work portable.
The interesting part of the Agentic AI Foundation's latest membership announcement is not the headcount. It's who paid to sit at the Gold table: Visa, Wells Fargo, and Alibaba. When banks and card networks start funding the governance of an agent protocol, that protocol has stopped being a developer convenience and started being infrastructure you can plan around.
What actually happened
Per the Linux Foundation's announcement on August 13, made at MCP Dev Summit Seoul, the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) added 57 new members over the past quarter — 3 Gold, 33 Silver, 21 Associate — bringing the total to 247 organizations, up from 190. The three new Gold members are Alibaba Group, Visa, and Wells Fargo.
AAIF governs the pieces most agent stacks are already built on: MCP, the coding agent goose, the AGENTS.md convention, and agentgateway. Executive director Mazin Gilbert framed the financial-services interest as recognition that "building agents at scale requires neutral infrastructure." The foundation also published an Agentic AI Momentum Report tracking 116 open source projects across five layers of the agent stack.
A membership tier is a check, not a shipped product. Gold membership at AAIF is a $200,000 contribution — real commitment, but it tells you where a company is placing a bet, not what it has deployed.
Why open agent standards matter for your business
Here's the practical translation for a ten-person company. Every MCP server you write, every AGENTS.md you commit, every tool definition you wire up is work. The question that decides whether that work is an asset or a rental is simple: if you switch model vendors next year, does it come with you?
Protocols under neutral foundation governance survive vendor strategy changes. Proprietary plugin formats do not — we watched that play out when agent plugins moved to an open 1.0 spec. A standard with 247 organizations and three financial institutions behind it is not going to be quietly deprecated in a reorg.
So the build rule stays boring and correct. Put your business logic behind an MCP server, not inside one vendor's assistant UI. Keep agent instructions in a file in your repo, not in a vendor dashboard. Treat the model as the swappable part and the tool layer as the thing you own. That's not idealism about open source — it's the cheapest way to avoid paying for the same integration twice.
Key takeaways
- AAIF added 57 members (3 Gold, 33 Silver, 21 Associate) to reach 247 organizations, announced August 13 at MCP Dev Summit Seoul
- New Gold members: Alibaba Group, Visa, and Wells Fargo — Gold tier is a $200,000 contribution
- The foundation governs MCP, goose, AGENTS.md, and agentgateway — the layer most agent projects already depend on
- Membership signals where money is being bet, not what is in production; read it as direction, not deployment
- Build rule: business logic behind an MCP server, agent instructions in your repo, model vendor kept swappable
Building agents you'd rather not rebuild in 18 months? We wire your tools and data behind open protocols so the model layer stays a config change, not a rewrite. See how we build it or tell us what you're automating.
