Agentic commerce: own your product data and checkout
Salesforce shipped agent-run shopping and OpenAI's in-chat checkout stalled. What agentic commerce actually means for a small retailer in 2026.
Two things happened in agentic commerce this year, and they point in opposite directions. Salesforce made its agent-run shopping experience generally available. OpenAI's "buy it inside ChatGPT" checkout quietly stalled. If you sell anything online, the gap between those two stories is the whole strategy: the AI shopping channel is real, but the AI checkout isn't where the money is yet. Build for the first, don't bet the store on the second.
What actually happened
On June 29, Salesforce brought Agentforce Commerce to general availability, per CXToday. It ships a Shopper Agent that runs a customer from discovery through checkout — checking live inventory, confirming carrier cutoffs, offering store pickup — plus a B2B Buyer Agent that handles procurement over WhatsApp and SMS. Native ChatGPT integration is live; Google Search and Gemini are slated for later this summer. Salesforce's own framing, from GM Nitin Mangtani: "The brands that win will have their Shopper Agent live on their own properties for the 2026 shopping season."
Now the other side. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT — buying without leaving the chat — powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol it co-built with Stripe, and charges merchants 4% on top of normal payment fees. But adoption was thin: Digital Commerce 360 reported OpenAI scaled the plan back, with only about 30 Shopify merchants live by early 2026. The pattern the industry settled into: shoppers discover in AI, then buy on your site.
Why it matters for your business
Strip away the platform names and here's your job. AI assistants are becoming a place customers start shopping, so your products need to be legible to a machine — clean structured data, accurate inventory, real prices, specs an agent can quote. That's not a Salesforce feature; it's a product feed you maintain and own. Get it right and you show up whether the agent lives in ChatGPT, Gemini, or a shopper agent on your own storefront.
What you should not do is hand your checkout — and a 4% cut plus the customer relationship — to a chatbot channel that's still walking itself back. Own the transaction. Let the AI channels send qualified buyers to a site and checkout you control, where you keep the margin, the data, and the follow-up. Discovery is worth renting. The sale isn't.
We build exactly that layer for operators: a clean, structured product catalog that AI shopping agents can read, wired to a checkout you own — so you're discoverable everywhere without surrendering the sale.
