Alphabet Q3 2026: Google Cloud margin triples, AI prices hold

Alphabet Q3 2026: Google Cloud revenue up 103% to $30.7B at a 36% margin, $51.4B capex, negative free cash flow. Why AI API prices won't fall soon.

Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings show who has pricing power in AI right now, and it isn't the buyer. Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion, and its operating income more than tripled. At the same time, Alphabet spent more on data centers than its operations brought in. A vendor with full order books and a capex bill that size has no reason to cut what you pay per token.

What actually happened

From Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings release, published October 28:

  • Total revenue: $127.6 billion, up 25% year over year.
  • Google Cloud: $30.7 billion in revenue, up 103%, against $15.2 billion a year ago. Operating income was $11.1 billion, up from $3.6 billion. That is about a 36% operating margin. Alphabet says TPU system sales were "a meaningful contributor."
  • Capex: $51.4 billion in purchases of property and equipment in the quarter. Operating cash flow was $42.3 billion, so free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion. It was also negative in Q2.
  • Usage: Sundar Pichai said Google's first-party model APIs now process "nearly 32 billion tokens per minute," more than four times a year ago. The Gemini app has reached one billion users.

Why it matters for your business

Three things follow for anyone who buys AI or cloud capacity.

Don't build a budget around price cuts. Token prices fell fast when vendors fought for share. Google Cloud now earns a 36% margin while demand runs at four times last year's volume. That is a seller's market. Plan on today's list price as your ceiling for the next year, and treat any drop as upside.

Capacity is the scarce thing. A company that spends $51 billion in a quarter and still reports "huge demand" is supply-constrained. For you, that shows up as rate limits, gated model access and quota requests that take a week. If an AI feature matters to revenue, get the quota in writing before you launch it.

Your leverage is portability. The only buyer who can negotiate a seller's market is one who can walk. Keep a second model provider tested and an abstraction layer between your code and any one vendor's SDK. Then route cheap tasks to cheaper models. That's where real savings are now, not in waiting for Google to discount.

Key takeaways

  • Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.7B; operating income tripled to $11.1B (about a 36% margin)
  • Alphabet spent $51.4B on capex in Q3 and had negative free cash flow of $9.1B
  • Google's model APIs process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than 4x a year ago
  • Budget AI at today's prices; expect quota limits, not discounts
  • Savings now come from model routing and a tested second provider

Paying list price for every AI call? We build model routers that send each task to the cheapest model that passes your tests, with a second vendor ready. Estimate what routing saves you, or send us last month's AI bill.
