Amazon and Microsoft Q3: Bedrock tokens up 17x, Azure up 48%

Amazon and Microsoft Q3 2026 earnings: AWS up 39% with Bedrock tokens up 17x and AgentCore agents doubling, Azure up 48% to $33.2B. Meter every agent.

Amazon and Microsoft both reported Q3 2026 earnings this week, and the number that matters most for operators is not revenue. It is agents. Amazon says Bedrock token volume grew nearly 17x in a year, and AgentCore customers deployed 2x more agents in Q3 than in the prior three quarters combined. Azure grew 48% to $33.2 billion. Agents have left the pilot stage at big companies. If yours are going to production too, meter them now.

What actually happened

From Amazon's Q3 2026 earnings release, filed October 29:

  • AWS: $46.0 billion in sales, up 39%, with $17.8 billion in operating income (a 38.7% margin). Amazon puts the run rate at $184 billion.
  • Bedrock: total token volume up nearly 17x year over year. Fortune 500 companies spent nearly 7x more on it.
  • AgentCore: "tens of thousands of customers" use it, and they deployed 2x more agents in Q3 than in the prior three quarters combined.
  • Capex: $77.3 billion in purchases of property and equipment in the quarter. Trailing free cash flow was an outflow of $42.4 billion. Amazon still expects about $220 billion in 2026 cash capex.
  • Outlook: Andy Jassy said AWS projects growth of over 40% in both 2027 and 2028.

From Microsoft's FY27 Q1 release, published October 28:

  • Azure: revenue up 48% to $33.2 billion. Microsoft Cloud revenue was $63.9 billion, up 30%.
  • Backlog: commercial remaining performance obligation up 73% to $677 billion.
  • Capex: $39.4 billion in additions to property and equipment, about double a year ago.

Why agents in production matter for your business

A 17x jump in tokens with "only" 39% revenue growth tells you where the volume went: agents that call models over and over in loops, not people typing prompts. That changes how AI spend behaves. A chatbot costs what your customers ask it. An agent costs what it decides to do, and a retry loop can burn a month's budget overnight.

So treat each agent like a new hire with a corporate card:

  • Give every agent its own key and its own budget. One shared API key means one invoice nobody can read.
  • Log cost per finished task, not per call. "$0.40 per invoice matched" is a number you can manage. "12 million tokens" is not.
  • Keep the agent logic outside the platform. AgentCore and Azure's agent services are good runtimes. Your prompts, tools and evals should still live in your repo, so a move is a redeploy, not a rewrite.

Neither vendor is short on customers. The leverage you have is clean data on what each agent costs and the ability to run it somewhere else.

Key takeaways

  • AWS grew 39% to $46.0B; Bedrock token volume rose nearly 17x year over year
  • AgentCore customers deployed 2x more agents in Q3 than in the prior three quarters combined
  • Azure grew 48% to $33.2B; Microsoft's commercial backlog rose 73% to $677B
  • Agents spend per decision, not per user: give each one its own key and budget
  • Track cost per finished task and keep agent code portable across runtimes

Putting agents into production? We build agents with per-agent budgets, cost-per-task logging and code you own, so they run on AWS, Azure or your own box. See how we build them, or estimate what an agent should cost per task.
