Ambi raises $26M for always-listening AI: set a recording policy

Ambi raised $26M for an always-listening AI assistant on iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch. Before staff turn it on, write the recording policy your business needs.

Ambi, a startup led by a former Plaud executive, raised $26 million and launched an always-listening AI assistant for iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch. It takes meeting notes, and an optional mode captures context all day. The hook for operators: the next AI tool your staff install may record your customers, and the vendor says disclosure is the user's job.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch, the $26 million came across multiple rounds, led by Luminous Ventures, with ODM Huaqin also investing. Co-founder and CEO Peter Mo runs a team of more than 50 people across San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

The apps work like a meeting note-taker. During a meeting, the agent can suggest answers or surface knowledge from your calendar, past meetings, a knowledge base and the web. Ambient capture is off by default. Ambi says it does not store recordings and that it encrypts data, but it did not say how. A desktop app that watches your work and a hardware device with a camera and microphones are planned, with no dates or prices.

On consent, Mo told TechCrunch that Ambi has to tell its users "they have to tell others about ambient capture." TechCrunch notes it is unclear if the apps will alert people that they are being recorded.

Why always-listening AI matters for your business

The liability lands on you. If an employee wears an always-on recorder to a sales call, the vendor's position is that telling the customer was the employee's job. That makes it your company's job. Recording laws differ by state, and some, including California, require consent from everyone on the call. Ask a lawyer which rules apply to your calls.

Ambient beats approved. Your IT list does not stop someone from installing an app on their own phone. A written policy does more: which tools may record, in which rooms, and what you say to the customer first.

Ask where the data goes. "We don't store recordings" is not the same as "we don't store transcripts." Get the data flow in writing before anyone turns the mode on. We covered what happens when a note-taker leaks.
