Apple App Store 18+ rule hits AI companion features Nov 16

Apple's new Dating and Relationships descriptor forces an 18+ rating on dating apps and romantic AI companions from November 16. Declarations are due January 12, 2027.

Apple's App Store 18+ rule now covers AI companions. In a developer notice posted November 2, Apple said App Store Connect gets two new content descriptors on November 16, and one of them forces a minimum 18+ age rating. If your app has a chat persona that can flirt, or shares a user's location with another person, you have a questionnaire to answer and a January deadline.

What actually happened

The two new descriptors, per Apple's notice:

  • Dating and Relationships. Covers features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people, and also "a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content." Any app that declares it gets a minimum rating of 18+.
  • Shared Location. Sharing real-world location with another person or group. Apple says this may not change the minimum rating in some regions.

Timing: the descriptors appear in App Store Connect on November 16. You must answer them the next time you submit an update or touch the age rating questionnaire. Every app must have them completed by January 12, 2027. Apple does not say what happens if you miss the date.

Brazil is the exception case. Local rules require A16 for Shared Location and A18 for Dating and Relationships. If you think your app deserves a lower rating, say a parent-and-child location app, Apple says you can request an official rating from Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

TechCrunch notes the practical weight lands on companion apps such as Character.AI and Replika, since most dating apps already restrict sign-up to adults. It also notes the rule reaches apps where a companion is one feature among many.

Why it matters for your business

Most of our clients do not build dating apps. Plenty of them are adding a chat persona to a retail, fitness or hospitality app this quarter, because a vendor demo made it look easy. The question Apple is asking is not "is this a dating app." It is "can this companion engage a user in romantic content." If your model can be steered there, and you have not tested whether it can, you do not know your answer.

The second descriptor is broader than it looks. Delivery tracking that shows a courier to a customer, a field-service app that shows a crew's location to a dispatcher, a family or team check-in feature: all of it is sharing real-world location with another person. Declare it.

What to do this month:

  1. Red-team your own chat feature for romantic or sexual output before November 16. If it gets there, fix the system prompt and the guardrails, or accept the 18+ rating and the users it costs you.
  2. Inventory every location-sharing feature and decide how you will declare it.
  3. Put January 12 on the release calendar, because a submitted update will force the questionnaire anyway.

A self-declared 18+ rating changes your store listing and hides your app on devices where a parent has limited ratings. Decide on purpose, not by default.

Key takeaways

  • Two new App Store Connect descriptors arrive November 16: Dating and Relationships, and Shared Location
  • Any app that declares Dating and Relationships, including romantic AI companions, gets a minimum 18+ rating
  • All apps must complete the declarations by January 12, 2027
  • A general-purpose chat persona that can be steered to romance counts, so test yours
  • Delivery tracking and crew location features fall under Shared Location
