Apple multiseat subscriptions are on by default: check your app
Apple now sells app subscriptions in bulk through Apple Business and School Manager, and multiseat is on by default. What changed and what your backend must handle.
As of October 22, businesses and schools can buy your app's subscription by the seat. Apple's new multiseat purchasing lets an organization buy many seats in one In-App Purchase through Apple Business or Apple School Manager, then hand them out with its device management tools. For a B2B app, that is a new sales channel with no sales team. The catch: multiseat subscriptions are on by default for many apps. If your backend assumes one subscription equals one user, check it this week.
What actually happened
Per Apple's developer news post:
- Organizations that use Apple Business or Apple School Manager can buy auto-renewable subscriptions in volume with one In-App Purchase.
- They assign seats with their existing device management tools and can add or remove seats at any time.
- Multiseat is enabled by default in App Store Connect unless you changed the setting before. You can change it at any time.
- Group purchases come next. Sandbox testing starts in November 2026, and Apple says people will be able to buy seats and invite others on the App Store "this winter."
Apple's App Store Connect help page adds the fine print. Subscriptions created before September 14, 2026 that do not use StoreKit 2, or that have Family Sharing on, are opted out by default. Subscriptions for custom apps cannot opt out. If you turn multiseat off, the subscription is removed from Apple Business and Apple School Manager, and existing seat subscriptions keep renewing until the buyer cancels.
Why multiseat subscriptions matter for your business
Seats change entitlement logic. A seat can be removed mid-term. Your server needs to know when that happens and lock the right user out, not the buyer. Read Apple's App Store Connect API guide for multiseat subscriptions and test seat removal before a real customer does it for you.
Your pricing may now be your bulk price. If you sell team plans on the web at a discount, check how the in-app price compares. A school buying 300 seats through Apple will notice the difference.
Decide on purpose. Multiseat is a real channel for education, field service and clinic apps. It is also a support load if your app has no concept of an organization. Turn it on because you planned for it, not because it was the default.
