Ask Gemini in Google Chat is on by default

Ask Gemini in Google Chat started rolling out on August 26, 2026. It puts a command line inside your team chat that reaches across Gmail, Drive and Calendar. For most Workspace customers it turns on without anyone deciding to turn it on, and the generous version of it expires on October 1.

What actually happened

Per Google's Workspace Updates post, Ask Gemini in Chat is billed as "a unified command line for your work, powered by Workspace Intelligence." It searches your Workspace data, drafts updates, generates images, summarizes conversations, schedules meetings and manages tasks — from inside Chat. You open it with Ctrl+G on Windows or ChromeOS, Cmd+G on macOS.

Three details matter more than the feature list:

It is on by default. Google's rollout note says it is "available by default if Gemini in Workspace in Chat and Workspace Intelligence for all apps are enabled." If those are on in your tenant — and for most Business and Enterprise domains they are — nobody had to opt in. Rollout is gradual, up to 15 days for visibility, starting August 26.

The limits are promotional. Through October 1, 2026, Workspace customers get higher usage limits so people can experiment. After that, standard limits apply.

Something got removed. The Gemini side panel in Chat is retiring for English-language users. Gems stay in the side panel of other Workspace apps, just not Chat.

Why default-on AI access matters for your business

A chat box that can read Gmail and Drive is a search index over your entire company, sitting in the app where your team is least careful. It respects existing permissions — but existing permissions in a small business are usually a decade of "share with anyone at the company" links nobody has audited. Ask Gemini does not create that exposure. It makes it trivially queryable, which is a different risk profile than a file sitting in a folder nobody opens.

Do two things this week. Run a sharing audit on Drive before your team discovers they can ask a chat box what the payroll spreadsheet says. Then look at the October 1 date: whatever workflows people build against promotional limits over the next five weeks are the workflows that start failing on October 2. If something becomes load-bearing, find out what the standard limit actually is before it becomes a support ticket.
