BigCommerce WebMCP: browser AI agents fill carts, on by default
Commerce and Cloudflare turned on WebMCP for eligible BigCommerce stores. Browser AI agents can search, compare and fill carts. Checkout stays yours.
If you sell on BigCommerce, AI agents can now shop your store, and you did not have to do anything. On October 21, Commerce.com and Cloudflare turned on WebMCP for eligible BigCommerce merchants. A shopper's AI agent in the browser can search your real catalog, compare items and fill a cart. Then it hands the shopper a link to check out on your site. It is on by default. Shopify did the same thing last month. The two big platforms for independent stores now agree: agents are customers.
What actually happened
Per the Commerce.com announcement, WebMCP lets a website tell the shopper's browser agent what it sells and what actions it supports. The agent does not guess at buttons and forms. The release's example: a shopper asks for "a lightweight jacket in my size under $150," and the agent queries the store's actual products and prices, adds the best match to a cart and returns a checkout link.
The key details:
- No code, no site changes. It is enabled by default for eligible stores. The release does not define "eligible."
- Checkout stays on your storefront. The agent fills the cart. The shopper completes the order on your site.
- There is an off switch. A new settings menu turns the feature off and also manages all of Commerce's AI connections.
- It sits on the BigCommerce MCP Toolkit. Server-side Storefront MCPs serve agents that connect from outside your store. WebMCP serves agents working in the shopper's own browser.
Commerce's Sharon Gee called it replacing guessing "with a handshake."
Why WebMCP matters for your business
Find the setting today. A default you did not pick is still a decision. Open the new AI connections menu, see what is on, and choose on purpose.
Your catalog data is the storefront now. The agent reads prices, stock and sizes straight from your store. Wrong variant data or stale inventory used to cost you a confused shopper. Now it costs you the sale before a human sees the page.
The checkout handoff is the good part. The agent builds the cart. Your site takes the payment, runs the fraud check and owns the customer. Keep that last step fast. A slow checkout page loses a shopper who has already decided.
Tag agent-built carts. Carts that arrive full with no browsing will distort your conversion numbers. Separate them in analytics while volume is small.
