ChatGPT ads reach India: self-serve buying at ₹725/day

OpenAI launched ChatGPT ads in India on August 27 with a self-serve Ads Manager opening September 4 and a ₹725 daily minimum. Third market in seven months.

OpenAI turned on ChatGPT ads in India today, its second-largest market. The headline everyone will run is the market. The number that actually matters to an operator is ₹725 — roughly $7.60 — the daily minimum to buy inventory through the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager when it opens on September 4. That is a floor a two-person shop can clear. This is the third market to get ChatGPT ads in seven months, and the cadence is the real signal.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch and Campaign India, the rollout works like this:

Where ads appear: Free and Go tiers only, to logged-in adults. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education stay ad-free. Ads sit below the response when relevant, labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer.

Who's buying now: WPP and Omnicom are the first agency partners — non-exclusive — with over 50 brands going live this week.

Who can buy next: The self-serve Ads Manager opens September 4 with a ₹725 daily minimum.

The guardrails: No ads to users under 18. Sensitive categories including mental health and politics are excluded. Advertisers get aggregate reporting only — impressions and clicks — with conversation content staying on OpenAI's side of the line.

For context on scale: India passed 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users as of February, per TechCrunch's earlier reporting, with most on the free or discounted Go tiers. OpenAI reported $6.7 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up from $5.7 billion the prior quarter. Ads launched in the U.S. in February and Europe earlier this month.

Why a new ad surface matters for your business

Three markets in seven months is not an experiment. It is a rollout schedule. Whatever market you sell into, plan on the same surface arriving, and plan on the self-serve tier arriving with it — that is the pattern the India launch just set.

The ₹725 floor is worth sitting with. Ad platforms usually gate early inventory behind agency minimums, which is exactly what the WPP and Omnicom partnership looks like. Opening a self-serve door at under eight dollars a day two weeks later says OpenAI wants long-tail advertisers in the auction immediately. Cheap inventory in a new channel with thin competition is the one reliably good moment in paid media, and it is short.

Here is the part most people will get wrong. Aggregate reporting means impressions and clicks — not conversions. You will get no conversation-level data, no query-level intent, nothing resembling the search-term report you use to prune a Google campaign. If your own analytics can't tell you what a click from a ChatGPT ad did after it landed, you are buying blind at any price.

So the prep work is on your side of the wire, and none of it is new:

Tag your landing pages properly and make sure the parameters survive your redirects, your consent banner, and your checkout. Most small-site tracking dies at one of those three.

Instrument server-side. Client-side pixels in an assistant-referred flow lose more than you think. Record the referrer and campaign at session start, persist it to the order.

Decide what a click is worth before September 4, not after your first invoice. At $7.60 a day the test is cheap. An untracked test at any price is just a donation.

We have said before that AI assistants become a channel whether you plan for them or not. The difference now is that the channel has a rate card and a login screen. Own the measurement layer and it's a channel. Skip it and it's a line item you can't defend.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT ads launched in India on August 27 for Free and Go tiers, shown to logged-in adults only and labeled as sponsored
  • Self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opens September 4 with a ₹725 (~$7.60) daily minimum — a floor small advertisers can clear
  • WPP and Omnicom are the first, non-exclusive agency partners, with 50+ brands going live this week
  • Advertisers receive aggregate impressions and clicks only — no conversation data, no query-level reporting
  • Third market in seven months after the U.S. in February and Europe in August; assume your market is on the schedule
  • Attribution is your job: tag landing pages, capture campaign data server-side at session start, and price a click before you buy one

A new ad channel is only cheap if you can measure it. We build server-side attribution that survives redirects, consent banners, and checkout — so you can tell what an assistant-referred click actually bought. See how we wire tracking you own, or send us your current setup and we'll show you where the data drops.
