ChatGPT Pro and Business now include OpenAI API credits

ChatGPT Pro and Business plans now include $20 to $500 a month in OpenAI API credits. No rollover, no Codex API keys. Use them to build your first agent.

Your ChatGPT bill now buys some API time too. Since October 28, eligible Pro and Business subscribers can claim OpenAI API credits each month, per OpenAI's help center: up to $500 on a Pro 500 plan and up to $500 pooled for a Business workspace. The credits are real money for a prototype. They also expire every month, and they stop at a hard 429.

What actually happened

OpenAI announced the benefit in its ChatGPT release notes on October 28. The help article sets the amounts per monthly billing period:

  • Pro 100: $100. Pro 200: $200. Pro 500: $500.
  • Business: $20 per paid Standard seat plus $100 per paid Premium seat, pooled, capped at $500 a month. Annual Business plans get the year up front, capped at $6,000.
  • Not eligible: Plus, free trials, Enterprise, Edu, and legacy Codex seats.

Rules that matter:

  • The subscription must be active for 7 days before you claim. The first grant is prorated.
  • One subscription links to one API organization. The person who claims must own both the ChatGPT plan or workspace and the API org, with the same email.
  • Unused credits don't roll over. Monthly grants expire at the end of each billing cycle.
  • The credits cover the Responses, Chat Completions, Agents, Realtime, and Images APIs, plus built-in tools. They don't cover Codex through API keys, and they don't raise your ChatGPT or Codex seat limits.
  • When the credits run out and you have no purchased balance, requests fail with HTTP 429 credit_balance_exhausted.

Why OpenAI API credits matter for your business

This is a free agent budget. Spend it on purpose. $200 a month covers a lot of prototyping: a support-inbox classifier, an order-status bot, a product-description pipeline. Pick one workflow and build it on the API this month. Don't let the credits expire on random Playground tests.

Link the right organization. One subscription links to one org. Don't link the founder's personal sandbox if production will run somewhere else. Make a company-owned API org first, and give it a clear name and owner.

Plan for the 429. A grant that runs out mid-month will take down any agent that depends on it. Check the balance in your code, alert at 80%, and decide in advance: fail soft, or fall back to paid credits. If you turn on Auto Recharge, set a monthly purchase limit first. OpenAI also says the benefit "may change or be removed," so treat it as a discount, not a foundation.

Key takeaways

  • Pro 100, 200 and 500 subscribers get $100, $200 or $500 in OpenAI API credits each billing month
  • Business workspaces get $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, capped at $500 a month ($6,000 a year on annual plans)
  • Credits expire each cycle with no rollover, and one subscription links to only one API organization
  • They don't cover Codex via API keys and don't raise ChatGPT or Codex seat limits
  • When credits run out with no paid balance, API calls fail with HTTP 429 credit_balance_exhausted
  • Link a company-owned API org, alert before the balance runs out, and cap Auto Recharge

You have up to $500 a month in API credits. Let's turn it into a working agent. We scope one workflow, build it on infrastructure you own, and add balance alerts and fallbacks so it survives the end of the month. Tell us the workflow you want automated.
