ChatGPT virtual try-on: your product photos are the fitting room

ChatGPT now offers virtual try-on and a Favorites library worldwide. Shoppers see your clothes on themselves before your site loads. Fix your product images.

ChatGPT virtual try-on means the first fitting happens off your site. OpenAI launched two ChatGPT shopping features globally today: a virtual try-on for clothing and accessories, and Favorites, a saved-products library. A shopper uploads a selfie, taps "Try On" in shopping results, and sees your jacket on their body. If you sell apparel, the image ChatGPT works from is now part of your conversion funnel — and you do not control the render.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch, users upload a selfie or full-body photo, and a Try On button in shopping results renders the item on them. Shoppers can also upload a screenshot of a product from any website and ask ChatGPT to try it on. Favorites saves products to a Library in the app, next to the generated try-on images.

Both features run on OpenAI's new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which OpenAI says produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and cuts image generation latency. ChatGPT can also take a photo of a celebrity outfit and find similar pieces to buy.

This is OpenAI's second run at commerce inside ChatGPT; TechCrunch notes the earlier instant checkout effort didn't land. Google has offered its own virtual try-on since July 2025, so this is now table stakes across the two biggest discovery surfaces.

Why ChatGPT virtual try-on matters for your business

Your product photos are the input. A model renders your garment from whatever image it gets. Busy lifestyle shots, cropped hems, and heavy filters give it less to work with. Clean, well-lit, full-length shots of the garment on a plain background give it more. That is the same photography discipline that already helps conversion — now it also feeds the try-on.

Screenshots mean you don't opt in. A shopper can screenshot your product page and try it on. Your item can appear in a try-on whether or not you have any feed or partnership with OpenAI. Make sure the page they screenshot shows the item clearly.

Favorites is a wishlist you don't own. Saved items now sit in ChatGPT's Library, not your account system. You lose that intent signal unless the shopper comes back to you. Give them a reason to save on your site too — price-drop alerts, back-in-stock emails, size memory.

Expect sharper expectations on fit and color. A rendered try-on sets a visual promise. If the item arrives looking different, that's a return. Accurate color in your images and honest fit notes on the page reduce the gap.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI launched ChatGPT virtual try-on and Favorites globally on October 1, 2026
  • Both run on the new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model
  • Shoppers can try on items from shopping results or from a screenshot of any product page
  • Clean, full-length, color-accurate product images give the try-on better input
  • Favorites moves wishlist intent into ChatGPT — keep a save-for-later reason on your own site
