ChatGPT visual ads: your product photos are the creative

OpenAI will test visual ads during ChatGPT image generation later this month in the US. Fix your imagery and conversion tracking before you buy one.

ChatGPT ads just got pictures. OpenAI says it will start testing a visual ad format in ChatGPT later this month, in the US, shown while people generate images. So far ChatGPT ads have been mostly text placed next to answers. Now the creative is an image, and the moment it shows up is when someone is already picturing a room, an outfit, or a product. For a store that sells things people can see, ChatGPT visual ads are the first slot in the answer layer where your product photography does the selling.

What actually happened

Per BleepingComputer and OpenAI's announcement, the test starts with an initial group of US advertisers. OpenAI says the ads can show product inspiration, how a product is used, or what a service feels like. It also says they will be clearly labeled, kept separate from the image being generated, and will not influence ChatGPT's answers. Guardrails are supposed to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are piloting brand-suitability checks, and OpenAI says they do not get access to private conversations.

The bigger change for operators is measurement. OpenAI added data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for sending conversion data back. It also listed attribution and measurement partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Northbeam, DV Rockerbox, Branch, Haus, and Measured. OpenAI puts ChatGPT's audience at 1.2 billion people a week and presents ads as revenue on top of paid plans.

Why it matters for your business

Two things decide whether this channel works for a small store, and neither is the bid.

The image. A visual ad shown during image generation competes with whatever the user just created. A white-background product shot won't hold up next to that. Lifestyle images that show the product in use will. If your catalog only has packshots, that is the gap to close before you spend anything.

The plumbing. A new ad channel without conversion data is just a cost. If you already use Triple Whale or Northbeam, ChatGPT may soon show up as one more source in the dashboard you already trust. If your purchase events only live in a browser pixel, you'll be guessing. Server-side conversion events, consistent order IDs, and UTM discipline are what let you compare ChatGPT against Meta and Google on the same numbers.

The test is small and US-only, so most small advertisers won't get in this month. That gives you time to prepare instead of reacting.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI will test visual ads during ChatGPT image generation later in October, with an initial group of US advertisers
  • Ads are labeled, kept separate from the generated image, and blocked in sensitive conversations, according to OpenAI
  • New measurement integrations include Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, Triple Whale, Northbeam, and AppsFlyer
  • For your business: build lifestyle product imagery and server-side conversion tracking now, so you can measure the channel the day you get in

Can you prove which ad channel paid for last month's orders? We wire server-side conversion tracking and clean product data so every new channel, ChatGPT included, reports into numbers you trust. See what we build or run your numbers through our ROI calculator.
