Claude Code strips smart TV ads: agents reach your Wi-Fi devices

Developers use Claude Code to strip ads and bloatware from smart TVs over Wi-Fi. The same reach applies to every device on your business network.

People are using AI coding agents to make their smart TVs dumb again, TechCrunch reports. One developer gave Claude Code a TV model number. The agent found the TV on Wi-Fi, removed 25 Xiaomi packages, and wrote a new home screen. It is a good hack. It is also a clear demo of what an AI agent on your laptop can reach on your network.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch:

  • cleanyourtv, by Gathin T., removes bloatware from Android TV and Google TV sets over Wi-Fi and installs a cleaner launcher. It started after he saw ads on his parents' TV. He says a few thousand people did the same within two days, on Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Fire TV, and LG sets.
  • dumbtv, by Muzzammil Yasin Sabuwala, was built with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, Claude Opus 5.5, and Claude Sonnet 5.5. Users point an agent at the repo to run it. It lists Fire TV Edition and Android TV sets from Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense, Xiaomi, and Shield.
  • Other users had Claude Code disable 25 apps and swap a 192 MB stock launcher for an 83 MB one.
  • It does break things. One person reported bricking an Android TV. Another got stuck halfway through a Fire TV hack. TechCrunch notes agents can disable important packages, and calls all of these projects works in progress.

The cleanyourtv approach does not need root access, and factory reset still works.

Why agent reach matters for your business

Your network is flatter than you think. The lobby TV, the menu board, the label printer, the camera recorder, and the POS terminal often share one Wi-Fi network with the office laptops. An agent that can find a TV can find all of them.

The agent needs no exploit. Nobody hacked anything here in the security sense. The agent used the same local access any app on that laptop has. If an employee runs a coding agent, it inherits that reach.

Some devices you cannot brick. A broken living room TV is a bad evening. A broken card reader on a Saturday is lost revenue. Before any agent touches a device, require a written rollback plan and a list of what it will change.

Segment first, then experiment. Put customer-facing screens, payment hardware, and office machines on separate networks. Then a test on one cannot reach the others.

Key takeaways

  • cleanyourtv and dumbtv use AI agents like Claude Code to strip ads and bloatware from smart TVs over Wi-Fi
  • One user bricked a TV; agents can disable critical packages
  • Any agent on a laptop can reach every device on the same network
  • Separate payment hardware, screens, and office machines onto different networks
  • Require a rollback plan before an agent changes any business device
