Claude Duet: a proactive AI agent that pays with Link and Shop Pay

Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on October 21, a standalone AI agent that doesn't wait for you to type. It checks your connected apps every few hours, sends a morning brief, keeps working in the background on its own virtual machine, and can buy things with Stripe's Link wallet and Shopify's Shop Pay after you approve. For a small business owner, that's an assistant with access to your inbox, your books, and a payment method. The approval rules matter more than the model.
What actually happened
From Anthropic's Claude Duet announcement:
- Access: Waitlist only, starting with US Pro and Max subscribers. It runs as its own app on iOS, Android, and claude.ai.
- Model: Built on Claude Opus 5.5.
- What it does alone: Reads, drafts, and prepares work. It runs tasks on a cloud VM with a browser, so your laptop can be off.
- What it asks first: Sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting anything. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are blocked even with approval.
- Payments: Link asks you to approve the spend and pays with a virtual card, so your real card number isn't shared. Shop Pay handles checkout at Shopify stores.
- Cost: No extra fee. Background checks count against your plan's usage limits.
Anthropic is direct about the limits. Its post says Duet "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent," and its launch post on X says it will keep tuning based on early users.
Why a proactive AI agent matters for your business
Approval prompts are only as good as the person tapping them. An agent that asks ten times a day trains you to tap "yes." Decide now what Duet is allowed near: which inbox, which QuickBooks company, which card limit.
Your store is now an agent destination. If you sell on Shopify, Duet users can check out through Shop Pay without visiting your site like a human would. Clean product data, accurate stock, and clear shipping terms are what an agent reads.
Usage limits are your real budget. Background work burns the same allowance as chat. Watch how fast a busy week drains it before you rely on it.
