Claude for Google Workspace beta edits Docs, Sheets and Slides

Anthropic's Claude for Google Workspace beta puts Claude in Docs, Sheets and Slides on all paid plans. The add-on is scoped; the connectors follow your Drive sharing.

Anthropic opened a public beta of Claude for Google Workspace on October 6. Claude now sits in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, and separate connectors let Claude create and edit those files from the Claude app. It is on all paid Claude plans. If your business runs on Google Drive, your AI choice no longer depends on which assistant Google put closest to your files.

What actually happened

Per Anthropic's product page:

  • Docs: Claude drafts, tightens wording and structure, and offers suggested edits you apply or dismiss.
  • Sheets: Claude builds financial models, analyzes data and can pull live numbers from connected data sources. 9to5Google reports it writes formulas and builds pivot tables and native charts.
  • Slides: Claude builds slides from your existing layouts, edits a selection and flags overlapping elements.
  • Review first. Changes show as suggestions in Docs, highlighted cells in Sheets and new slides in Slides before you accept them.
  • Two access models. In the sidebar add-on, Claude sees only the sidebar, the open file and any connectors you turn on. When you edit Google files from Claude on web or desktop, Claude can reach any file your Drive permissions allow.
  • Admin control. Workspace admins decide who installs the add-on, domain-wide or by group. It works in Chrome, Edge and Safari.

Team and Enterprise plans fall under Anthropic's Commercial Terms and DPA. Consumer plans fall under its Privacy Policy.

Why Claude for Google Workspace matters for your business

The two modes have different blast radii. The sidebar is file-scoped. The connector is Drive-scoped. If one login can open the owner's tax folder, so can Claude in connector mode. Clean up "anyone with the link" shares before you turn it on.

Sheets is where the money is. Most small businesses run pricing, payroll estimates and inventory in a spreadsheet. A model that writes the formula and shows changed cells cuts the hour you spend on a VLOOKUP. Still check the math on anything that sets a price.

Pick the plan on terms, not features. If customer data goes into these files, use Team or Enterprise so the commercial terms and DPA apply. Do not let staff do client work on personal Pro accounts.

It is a beta. Test it on a copy of your key sheet before you trust it with the live one.

Key takeaways

  • The sidebar sees only the open file; the connectors follow your full Drive permissions
  • Edits show as suggestions or highlighted cells before you accept them
  • Admins control installs by domain or group
  • Use Team or Enterprise for client data, and audit Drive sharing first
