Claude Personal Finance beta: read-only bank data via Plaid
Claude Personal Finance links bank and card accounts through Plaid with read-only access to two years of transactions. US beta on Pro, Max, Ultra. Keep business books separate.
Claude can now read your bank statements, and owners will be tempted to point it at the business. On November 5, Anthropic announced Personal Finance in Claude, a beta that links bank and card accounts through Plaid and lets Claude answer questions about spending, bills and fees. It is read-only. It is rolling out this week on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US. It is built for your personal money, not your company's, and that line matters.
What actually happened
Per Anthropic's announcement:
- Plaid connection. You sign in to your bank yourself through Plaid. Claude does not ask for or see your bank password.
- What Claude sees. Bank name, account name, type and last four digits, balances, credit limits, and "up to two years of transactions."
- Read-only. "Personal Finance can't move, manage, or invest your money."
- What it does. Totals spending by category, compares months, flags duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that crept up, and builds charts, bill calendars or dashboards.
- Privacy. Chats in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic's models. Chats outside the hub follow your normal privacy settings. You can unlink an account at any time.
- Limits. No investment advice, no ads, no lending products. Anthropic says Claude "can make mistakes" and tells you to check important numbers with your bank.
The post does not mention business accounts, Team or Enterprise plans, or a limit on how many accounts you can link. Some outlets have reported specific account and institution counts; we could not confirm them in Anthropic's post, so we left them out.
Why it matters for your business
Most small business owners we work with have the same problem: personal and business spending leak into each other, and nobody looks at the recurring charges until tax time. A tool that finds the software bill that quietly went up all year is useful. Use it on your personal side and you will likely find money.
Do not make it your bookkeeping system. Three reasons:
- It is a personal product. It is on individual plans, not Team or Enterprise. Your accountant, your partner and your audit trail are not in that chat.
- Read-only is not reconciled. Claude can total transactions. It does not post entries, match receipts or close the month. Your books still live in QuickBooks, Xero or whatever your CPA uses.
- Answers need a check. Anthropic says so itself. A wrong total in a personal budget is an annoyance. A wrong total in a sales tax filing is a letter from the state.
If you want this kind of analysis on business money, build it on top of your accounting system with your own access controls, not on a consumer chat tab.
Key takeaways
- Claude Personal Finance launched in US beta on November 5 for Pro, Max and Ultra plans
- Accounts connect through Plaid with read-only access to balances and up to two years of transactions
- Personal Finance hub chats are not used for model training; you can unlink any time
- It finds duplicate charges, fees and creeping bills, but it does not reconcile books
- Keep business accounts in your accounting stack, where your CPA and audit trail are
