Claude Startups program: free Claude Team, $1,000 in API credits
Anthropic's expanded Claude Startups program gives a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits. Who qualifies, and what to do after year one.
Anthropic expanded the Claude Startups program to more founders. Eligible companies get a free year of Claude Team, a one-time $1,000 API credit, partner discounts, and office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team. If you are a young company paying for AI seats out of pocket, this is real money. It is also a one-year price, and year two is what you should plan for.
What actually happened
Per Anthropic's announcement, dated October 6:
- Claude Team, free for a year. Up to five Premium seats. Anthropic values that at about $6,000 ($100 per seat per month).
- $1,000 in API credits. One time, for new builders. With the seats, Anthropic puts the direct value at up to $7,000.
- Partner discounts. A "Claude Startup Stack" of partner offers valued at up to $45,000. Anthropic did not list the partners in the post.
- Who qualifies. Startups founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two.
- Support. Virtual office hours with the Applied AI team, help getting listed on Claude Marketplace, and events and hackathons where space allows.
Benefits fall under Anthropic's supplemental credit terms and each partner's own terms. Quartz, via Yahoo Tech notes the program first launched in May.
Why it matters for your business
"Founded in the last five years" covers a lot of small businesses that do not call themselves startups. A three-year-old shop, agency, or service company may qualify. Check before you pay for another seat.
- Apply if you fit. Five Premium seats for a year covers most small teams. That is budget you can move to the build itself.
- Spend the credits on a real workflow. $1,000 in API credits is usually enough to prototype and pilot one automation: order triage, quote drafting, support summaries. Do not burn it in a playground.
- Price year two on day one. Free seats end. Put the full seat cost and your expected API spend in the plan now, so the renewal is a decision, not a surprise.
- Do not let the discount pick your stack. Build behind your own interface so you can swap models later. Free credits are a good reason to start on Claude, not a reason to lock in.
Key takeaways
- Claude Startups now offers a free year of Claude Team (up to 5 Premium seats) and a $1,000 API credit
- Eligible: founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2
- Partner discounts are valued at up to $45,000; partners were not named
- Use the credits on one production workflow, not experiments
- Budget the full cost for year two and keep your code model-agnostic
Got the credits, need the build? We turn a free year of Claude into a working automation, with a model layer you can swap and a cost model you can trust. Run the ROI numbers or tell us the workflow.
