Disney hires Character.AI's staff. Your vendor's team can leave

Disney offered jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees in its bankruptcy deal. When an AI vendor's team leaves, the product stays behind. Plan for it.

The Character.AI bankruptcy just got its second act. A court filing shows Disney offered jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees, the majority of the company, and the filing says the vast majority accepted. Disney is not buying the chatbot app. It is buying a license to some assets and hiring the people. For any business that runs on a small AI vendor, this is the failure mode to plan for: the team leaves and the product stays behind with nobody to run it.

What actually happened

From TechCrunch's report on the filing, which cites the court document first reported by Bloomberg:

  • The hires. Disney offered jobs to at least 60 employees. The filing estimates their pay at about $60 million a year.
  • The assets. Character.AI said earlier that Disney agreed to acquire some of its assets for $20 million, as the stalking-horse bidder. Another company can still outbid Disney.
  • The leadership. Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand is already Disney's first CTO.
  • The cause. The filing points to high costs, plus potential litigation liabilities and regulatory engagement.

We wrote about the Chapter 11 filing last week. This week shows where the value went: to the engineers, not the app.

Why it matters for your business: AI vendor risk is people risk

This is the acquihire pattern, and it is common in AI. A big company wants the team, so it licenses the tech and hires the staff. The product often keeps running for a while. Then support slows, bugs stay open, and the API stops changing. Nobody announces the end. You find out when something breaks.

If a small AI startup runs a core part of your operation, such as support chat, quoting or product content, ask three questions now:

  • Who runs it if the team leaves? Find out how many engineers the vendor has. A product with five people behind it has a different risk than a product with five hundred.
  • Can you get your data out today? Prompts, conversation logs, fine-tuning data and configuration. Test the export now, not during a bankruptcy.
  • Is the vendor behind an interface you control? If your code calls the vendor through your own adapter, a swap takes days. If the vendor's SDK is in every file, a swap takes months.

Key takeaways

  • Disney offered jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees, about $60 million a year in pay, per a court filing
  • Disney's $20 million bid is for some assets, not the consumer app, and can still be topped
  • In AI deals, the team often moves and the product stays behind
  • Check your vendor's headcount, test your data export, and keep the vendor behind your own interface

What happens to your workflow if your AI vendor's engineers quit on Friday? We build AI systems behind interfaces you own, so a vendor exit is a config change, not a rebuild. See how we build or ask us to audit your vendor exposure.
