firmly raises $15M, launches Ask Agent for merchant sites
firmly's $15M Series A funds its no-code agentic commerce layer and Ask Agent, a chat-to-checkout widget. Know who holds your integration before you plug in.
Agentic commerce has a plumbing problem, and firmly just raised $15 million to sell the plumbing. The Seattle company announced a $15 million Series A on November 5 and launched Ask Agent, a conversational shopping and checkout widget for merchant websites. The pitch: one no-code connection to every AI agent, marketplace and shoppable surface, instead of a new integration every time a new protocol ships. That pitch is right about the problem. Whether it is the right answer for your store depends on who holds the connection.
What actually happened
Per firmly's release:
- The round. Squarepoint Capital led. J.P. Morgan Payments, Mastercard and Samsung NEXT joined as strategic investors, plus ARK Invest, Alumni Ventures and others. Total funding is now about $20 million.
- firmly Connect. This is the core product. It is one connection that lets AI assistants, publishers, social platforms and ad platforms sell a merchant's catalog and run checkout. firmly says the merchant stays merchant of record and keeps its payment provider, customer data and relationship. firmly says Connect reaches more than 11 million merchants and more than $900 billion in GMV.
- The protocol angle. The company's president said firmly combines browser automation, like the kind shopping agents such as Instinct use, with deterministic protocols like Google's UCP. The merchant writes no code.
- Ask Agent. It is a chat widget for your own site. Shoppers describe what they want in plain language and get recommendations from your real-time catalog, pricing and inventory. They can check out in the conversation, and it handles loyalty, cross-sell and post-purchase support. It installs with one line of JavaScript.
- The numbers. firmly says early deployments show conversion gains of up to 18% and average order value gains of up to 23%. These are the vendor's own "up to" numbers, not an audited average.
Why it matters for your business
Every month brings another agent checkout path. There is UCP, ACP, Universal Cart, Copilot, and every shopping agent that drives a browser. A small merchant cannot build and maintain all of them. A middleware layer that does it once is a reasonable trade, and staying merchant of record is the right default to insist on.
But "zero engineering effort" means someone else's engineering sits between your catalog and the agent. Before you plug in, get three things in writing. First, which channels firmly sells your catalog into, and whether you can turn each one off. Second, what data firmly keeps from orders it routes. Third, how you leave: if firmly is acquired or changes price, can you move to native UCP without re-platforming?
For Ask Agent, test it like any on-site AI. Run it on a slice of traffic against your current search and product pages. Measure conversion and returns yourself, not just the "up to" numbers. Then check what it says when a product is out of stock or a discount does not apply.
Key takeaways
- firmly raised a $15M Series A led by Squarepoint, with J.P. Morgan Payments, Mastercard and Samsung NEXT; about $20M total
- firmly Connect is one no-code link to AI agents, marketplaces and shoppable platforms; the merchant stays merchant of record
- Ask Agent adds chat-based discovery and in-chat checkout to your own site with one line of JavaScript
- The up-to-18% conversion and up-to-23% AOV numbers are firmly's own claims; A/B test before you believe them
- Get channel control, data retention and an exit path in writing before a middleware layer holds your agent integrations
The agent channel is real. The lock-in can be too. Rush Commerce builds agent-ready catalogs and checkout integrations you own, so you can use a middleware layer without depending on it. See how we build vendor-agnostic commerce systems or tell us which AI channels you want to sell in.
