Gap AI shopping agents: Old Navy, Banana Republic, Daydream

Gap launched AI shopping agents at Old Navy and Banana Republic and opened its catalog to Daydream and Alta Daily. What a smaller retailer should copy.

Thirty years after Gap put its first store online, Gap Inc. is rolling out AI shopping agents across its brands. Old Navy and Banana Republic now have conversational shopping agents on their websites and apps, and Gap is putting its products into two outside AI styling apps, Daydream and Alta Daily. The interesting part is not the chatbot. It is that a big retailer is now feeding its catalog to someone else's agent on purpose.

What actually happened

Gap announced the launch on October 5 at SF Tech Week, per Gap Inc.'s announcement and Retail Dive:

  • Onsite agents. Old Navy and Banana Republic shoppers can describe what they want in plain language on the brands' sites and apps instead of clicking filters.
  • Daydream. An AI fashion discovery app co-founded by Julie Bornstein. Shoppers type what they want and get suggestions. Retail Dive reports it draws on all Gap Inc. brands.
  • Alta Daily. A styling app led by Jenny Wang that builds outfits around a user's schedule, budget, weather, and clothes they already own. Gap's announcement ties it to the Gap brand and mentions avatar try-ons.
  • Timing. Retail Dive says shoppers can get recommendations from both apps starting October 6.
  • What was not said. Gap did not explain how product data reaches the partners or publish results. In March, it announced support for Google's Universal Commerce Protocol for checkout in Google's AI surfaces, so this is part of a longer plan.

Why it matters for your business

Gap is working both sides: an agent on its own site, and its catalog in agents it does not own. Small retailers should copy that structure, not the budget.

  1. Your catalog is the product now. A shopper asking for "a linen shirt for a summer wedding under $80" gets an answer only if your data says linen, says the occasion fits, and has the right price and stock. Thin titles and missing attributes mean the agent recommends someone else.
  2. Onsite search is the cheap first step. Natural-language search on your own store is no longer a big build on most platforms. It also shows you what shoppers ask for that you do not carry.
  3. Outside agents are a channel, not a favor. Daydream and Alta Daily are discovery apps. Treat them like a marketplace: know what data you send, how they link back, and who keeps the customer.
  4. Fit is still the hard part. Apparel returns are expensive. An agent that recommends the wrong size makes that worse. Add size and fit data before you add a chatbot.

Key takeaways

  • Old Navy and Banana Republic launched conversational shopping agents on their sites and apps
  • Gap is putting its products into Daydream and Alta Daily, two outside AI styling apps
  • Gap did not say how catalog data reaches partners or share performance figures
  • Agents recommend what your product data describes; fix attributes first
  • Treat outside shopping agents like marketplaces: control the feed and the link back
