Gemini books appointments and calls your front desk
At Made by Google 2026, Gemini got agentic booking across Angi, Thumbtack, Zocdoc and OpenTable — and it phones businesses. What that means for your front desk.
Google spent today's hardware event mostly on cameras. The part that changes your week is the booking layer: Gemini can now run multi-step tasks inside other companies' apps, and it can pick up the phone and call a business on a customer's behalf. If you take appointments, reservations, or service requests, the next person who books with you may not be a person.
What actually happened
At Made by Google 2026, Google announced the Pixel 11 line and a batch of Gemini Intelligence features. TechCrunch's rundown of the Gemini side is the useful one:
- Gemini handles agentic tasks like ordering groceries, booking rides, or getting coffee
- It calls businesses on a user's behalf for table reservations and appointments. Users can take over or stop a task mid-run, and review transcripts of AI-operated calls
- Roughly a dozen new connected apps roll out over the coming weeks, including Angi, Thumbtack, Zocdoc, OpenTable (U.K.), Ticketmaster, Fever, Get Your Guide, Wix, Otter.ai, and Granola
Read that app list again. Home services, medical scheduling, restaurants, tickets. Those are small-business front doors.
The mechanics matter more than the demo. Per Google's own support documentation, task automation is a beta that lets Gemini "open an app and interact with its screen" — running in what Google calls a secure, virtual window that limits it to the apps in play. It is gated to Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26-class hardware, users 18 and up, English and Korean, U.S. and Korea, with daily request caps.
And one line from that doc is the whole story: you are "responsible for Gemini's actions during a task, including mistakes and unexpected results like purchases." Google built the agent. The customer eats the errors. Which means you eat the support ticket.
Why AI booking agents matter for your business
Two channels just changed, and neither is your website.
Your phone line. An AI is calling to book a slot, and the call is transcribed. Your receptionist's worst-case script is now a permanent record on someone else's device. If your phone handling is inconsistent, that inconsistency is now machine-readable. This is the same pressure we wrote about when Google Search started calling stores for inventory — it just arrived at the appointment book.
Your booking app. Screen automation means the agent drives your UI as a user. It does not read your API, respect your rate limits, or understand your modal. A confirmation step that a human skims and clicks through is a step an agent can get wrong at scale. If your booking flow relies on a human noticing something, it will break.
The fix is not a Gemini integration. It is the boring version: a canonical availability record, a booking endpoint that is idempotent, a confirmation the customer receives out-of-band, and a cancellation path that does not require a phone call. Build that and it does not matter whether the booking came from a person, an agent, Angi, or your own site. Skip it and you will spend Q4 reconciling double-booked slots you cannot explain.
Key takeaways
- At Made by Google 2026 on August 12, Gemini gained agentic booking and the ability to call businesses for reservations and appointments, with call transcripts available to the user
- New connected apps include Angi, Thumbtack, Zocdoc, OpenTable (U.K.), Ticketmaster and Fever — the front doors of local service businesses
- Task automation works by driving app screens in a sandboxed window, not through your API, and is currently a beta limited to recent Pixel and Galaxy hardware in the U.S. and Korea
- Google's terms put responsibility for the agent's mistakes — including purchases — on the user, which routes the complaint to your support queue
- Make your booking flow idempotent, your availability canonical, and your confirmations out-of-band before agent traffic finds you
Can your booking flow survive a bot that clicks fast? We build scheduling and intake systems with a single source of truth for availability, idempotent writes, and confirmations that reach the customer no matter which channel booked them. See how we build it or tell us where your calendar breaks.
