Gemini free tier drops to Flash-Lite on October 9

From October 9, free Gemini app users get Flash-Lite only and AI Plus loses Pro. If your team runs on free AI accounts, price the seats now.

A lot of small teams run on free AI accounts. Somebody drafts the product copy in the free Gemini app, somebody else summarizes vendor contracts in it, and nobody pays for a seat. That gets worse on October 9. Google is changing the Gemini free tier to Flash-Lite only, its smallest model. AI Plus subscribers lose the Pro model. The Pro model now starts at $19.99 a month.

What actually happened

9to5Google reported on October 3 that Google updated its support documentation with new model access by plan. Starting October 9:

  • Free: Flash-Lite only. No Flash, no Pro.
  • Google AI Plus ($4.99/month): Flash-Lite and Flash. Pro is removed.
  • Google AI Pro ($19.99/month): Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. It also gets Deep Think, which was previously only in the Ultra tiers.
  • Google AI Ultra: all models, as before.

Google is also adding "low," "medium," and "high" effort settings per model in the app. Higher effort can complete harder tasks, but it uses more of your usage limit. Android Headlines confirms the same October 9 date and plan split.

Why it matters for your business

Free was always a subsidy, and subsidies end. The model your team tested last month is not the model a free account gets next week. If someone built a habit, or a process, on Flash or Pro in a free account, the output quality changes on October 9 without any notice in your workflow.

Effort settings make limits harder to predict. "High" effort uses more quota. A plan that felt unlimited at default settings can hit its cap sooner when people find the high setting. Decide which tasks need it.

Know where your business data goes. Free consumer accounts are the classic shadow-AI channel. If your team uses them for customer data or contracts, the price change is a good time to move that work to accounts you control and can audit.

The API is a separate decision. This change is about the Gemini app plans. If you build on Gemini through the API, your costs follow the API price list, not these subscriptions. Pin your model versions either way.

Key takeaways

  • From October 9, free Gemini app accounts get Flash-Lite only
  • AI Plus ($4.99) keeps Flash but loses Pro; AI Pro ($19.99) gets Pro plus Deep Think
  • New low/medium/high effort settings use more of your limit at higher levels
  • List who on your team uses free AI accounts for business work, and for what
  • Budget paid seats for the people whose work depends on the stronger models
