Google AI Mode answers in-page. Own your channels.
Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default in AI Mode and is rolling generative UI to all Search users. What zero-click search means for your traffic.
Google Search is turning into an answer, not a list of links to your website. In AI Mode — now running on Gemini 3.5 Flash by default and past a billion monthly users — Search increasingly writes the response itself, and this summer it starts building custom interactive tools right on the results page. If a meaningful share of your customers find you through Google, your top of funnel is changing under you.
What actually happened
At I/O 2026, Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model for AI Mode (and the Gemini app) globally, and said AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users. The bigger shift is what Google calls generative UI: powered by its Antigravity coding tech, when a query would be better served by a tool than a paragraph, Search now codes a custom dashboard, tracker, or simulation in real time — "mini apps for your own specific tasks." Google says that capability rolls out to everyone in Search this summer, free of charge.
Alongside it: the biggest redesign of the search box in over 25 years, and always-on information agents that monitor the web for subscribers. TechCrunch's read on the direction was blunt — "Google Search as you know it is over." The results page is becoming an answer surface, not a directory that ships traffic to your site.
Why it matters for your business
Zero-click search isn't new, but generative UI accelerates it. If Google can answer "how much does an epoxy garage floor cost in Phoenix" or build a comparison table in-page, the user never clicks through to anyone's site. Ranking #1 for that query is worth a little less every quarter.
The defensive move for a small business is to stop renting your entire top of funnel from Google. Build channels you actually own: an email and SMS list, a direct booking or ordering flow, repeat-customer loops that never route through a search box. And where you still depend on discovery, optimize to be the cited source in the answer — structured data, plain answers to the real questions your customers ask, on pages you control — because getting named in Google's answer is the new version of ranking. The businesses that get hurt are the ones whose only path to a customer is a blue link that's quietly disappearing.
Key takeaways

- Generative UI (Antigravity) rolls out to all Search users this summer — Search builds custom tools and answers in-page, free
- Zero-click search accelerates: fewer users click through to your site even when you rank well
- Own channels you control — email/SMS, direct booking, repeat-purchase loops — and optimize to be the cited source, not just the top link
