Google Assistant shuts down Sept 4 — audit your voice stack
Google starts removing Assistant from Android, Wear OS and headphones on September 4, 2026, with no way back. What breaks and what to own instead.
Google has a date. Starting September 4, 2026, it begins removing Google Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches and compatible headphones, replacing it with Gemini. There is no toggle back. If any part of your operation runs through a voice assistant — a warehouse shortcut, a hands-free lookup, a routine your front-of-house staff triggers — you have about four weeks to find out whether it survives.
What actually happened
Per 9to5Google and Android Authority, Google confirmed the timeline through emails to users and a banner on its own Assistant support pages. The rollout starts September 4 and "may take a few weeks to reach everyone."
The specifics that matter:
- One-way door. Once Assistant is removed from your device, you can't use it or switch back — on the phone or on anything paired to it.
- Paired devices follow the phone. Wear OS watches, earbuds and headphones lose Assistant when the phone does. Android Auto projected from a handset goes with it.
- Cars with Google built-in are the exception. Assistant keeps running there past September 4.
- "Hey Google" doesn't die, it redirects. The wake word and the power-button long-press launch Gemini instead.
This was supposed to be finished by the end of 2025. It slipped a full year. That's the tell: the migration was harder than the announcement implied, and the parity gap closed on Google's schedule, not on yours.
Why an assistant shutdown matters for your business
A voice assistant is a channel you rent. Same category as a Facebook page or a marketplace listing. The interaction model, the trigger phrase, and the thing that happens after the trigger are all owned by a company that just demonstrated it will swap the whole layer out and remove the rollback.
Test the specific commands, not "does Gemini work." Gemini handles general conversation better. That was never the risk. The risk is the narrow, boring, repeated command — the one your shop lead says forty times a day into a watch. Write those down this week, run each one through Gemini on one device, and note which ones now take three turns instead of one. That list is your migration cost.
If voice is load-bearing, put it on rails you own. A phone-based voice agent built on Twilio and LiveKit doesn't get deprecated by a platform reorg — we've written up that stack before. Your number, your prompt, your logs, your swap-in model. Slower to build than a wake word, and it's still there next September.
Key takeaways
- Google begins removing Assistant from Android, tablets, Wear OS and headphones on September 4, 2026
- Removal is permanent — no option to switch back once it reaches your device
- Cars with Google built-in keep Assistant; Android Auto projected from a phone does not
- The migration slipped a year from its original end-of-2025 target
- Inventory your repeated voice commands and test each one against Gemini before September
- Load-bearing voice workflows belong on infrastructure you control, not a platform wake word
If a platform can delete your interface, it isn't your interface. We build voice and automation layers on infrastructure you own — your number, your prompts, your logs, a model you can swap. See how we build, or send us the workflow you're worried about.
