Google Universal Cart launches in the US: your feed is the store

Google Universal Cart is live in US Search and Gemini, with UCP checkout, price-drop alerts and Google Pay. Your product feed is now the storefront.

Google Universal Cart is now live for US shoppers, and it keeps your product in a cart you do not control. Google announced the US launch on October 15. Universal Cart is one cart across Google Search's AI Mode and the Gemini app. It holds items from many retailers, watches their prices, and checks out through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Google first showed it at I/O in May. Now it is a real sales channel, and your product feed decides how you look in it.

What actually happened

Per Google's launch post and TechCrunch's coverage:

  • One cart, many stores. Shoppers save products from different retailers and come back later without starting over.
  • Background tracking. Universal Cart runs on Google's Shopping Graph, which Google says has more than 60 billion product listings. It sends price-drop and back-in-stock alerts.
  • Discounts in the cart. It shows promo codes. Because it is built on Google Wallet, it also looks at the shopper's card perks and suggests how to pay.
  • Two checkout paths. At many stores, the shopper pays with Google Pay inside the cart. Or they move the items to the merchant's own cart and finish on the merchant's site.
  • Named checkout partners: Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and "many Shopify merchants."
  • The merchant stays the seller of record. You still own the order confirmation and the customer support.

Google did not publish fees, and it did not list which stores get in-cart checkout and which get the cart transfer.

Why Universal Cart matters for your business

A shopper who saves your product and then gets a price-drop alert from Google is shopping from your feed, not your site. Price, stock, variant and promo data have to be correct where Google reads them. If they are not, the alert goes to a competitor whose data is correct.

What we would do this week:

  • Audit your Merchant Center feed. Check price, availability, GTINs and variant attributes against the live store. Old feed data now shows up as a wrong alert.
  • Decide your price-drop strategy. Universal Cart alerts on price drops. A small, planned markdown can now reach every shopper who saved the item. A careless one does too.
  • Check UCP support on your platform. On Shopify, see our notes on Storefront MCP to UCP. Elsewhere, ask your platform vendor for a date.
  • Tag the channel. Track Google cart transfers and in-cart orders on their own, so you know if the channel pays for its margin.

Key takeaways

  • Google Universal Cart is live in the US in Search AI Mode and the Gemini app
  • It holds items from many retailers and sends price-drop and restock alerts from the Shopping Graph
  • Checkout uses UCP: Google Pay in the cart, or a transfer to the merchant's own cart
  • The merchant stays the seller of record and owns support
  • Feed accuracy now decides who gets the alert and the sale

We wire stores into agent checkout. Clean Merchant Center feeds, UCP-ready carts, and reporting that splits Google cart orders from the rest. See what we build.
