HackerRank Chakra AI interviewer goes GA: hiring devs now

HackerRank's Chakra AI interviewer is generally available after 500,000 beta interviews. What it scores, the bias-audit rules, and how a small team should hire devs.

HackerRank made Chakra, its AI interviewer for developer hiring, generally available this week after about six months in beta, TechCrunch reports. The AI interviewer watches a candidate work in a real code repository, asks follow-up questions, and scores how they use AI tools. The leetcode puzzle is dead. The new test is judgment with an AI assistant open.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch:

  • Chakra gives candidates tasks in a real-world codebase, observes how they work, and asks contextual follow-ups about their approach.
  • It evaluates critical thinking, judgment and "AI fluency," meaning how well the candidate directs and checks AI tools.
  • HackerRank says it folds what used to be three interview rounds into one assessment and sends a detailed report to the hiring manager.
  • The company says Chakra ran more than 500,000 interviews in beta, with testers including Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini.
  • HackerRank claims 70–80% fewer suspicious-activity flags than traditional assessments. That is the vendor's number, not an independent audit.
  • Chakra scores candidates. Humans still make the hiring decision.

TechCrunch also notes the regulatory backdrop: New York City already requires bias audits and candidate notice for automated hiring tools.

Why it matters for your business

Test the job you are hiring for. Your developers will ship code with an AI assistant open. An interview that bans those tools measures the wrong skill. An interview that allows them has to check whether the candidate catches the AI's mistakes. That is the part that matters.

You don't need Chakra to copy the idea. A small team can run the same format in an afternoon:

  • Hand the candidate a small, real repo with a bug and one feature request.
  • Let them use any AI tool they want, with screen share on.
  • Ask why they accepted or rejected each suggestion. Weak candidates can't answer.

Automated scoring brings compliance work. If you hire in NYC or use a vendor tool that screens out candidates, ask the vendor for its bias audit and tell candidates an AI is involved. Keep a human on every reject decision, and log who made it.

Key takeaways

  • HackerRank Chakra, an AI interviewer for developers, is now generally available
  • It scores how candidates work in a real codebase and how well they use AI tools
  • 500,000+ beta interviews; the 70–80% lower cheating-flag figure is HackerRank's own claim
  • NYC requires bias audits and candidate notice for automated hiring tools
  • Small teams can run a real-repo, AI-allowed interview without buying a platform
