Legora raises $550M at $8.8B: legal AI hits $200M ARR

Legal AI startup Legora raised a $550M Series E at an $8.8B valuation, past $200M ARR. Ask your lawyer how AI changes the bill before your next contract.

Your lawyer bills by the hour. Their software now does some of those hours. On October 21, legal AI startup Legora raised a $550 million Series E at an $8.8 billion valuation and said it has passed $200 million in annual recurring revenue. That money comes from law firms and legal teams buying AI that drafts, reviews, and researches. The question for a small business is simple: who keeps the savings?

What actually happened

Per Legora's announcement, Atreides Management led the round. New investors include Fidelity, Capital Group, and J.P. Morgan, and existing backers including Accel, Benchmark, and General Catalyst participated. The valuation is up from $5.6 billion at its previous round.

The growth numbers are the company's own:

  • ARR above $200 million. Legora says it took under 18 months to go from $1 million to $100 million, and under six months to add the next $100 million.
  • More than 2,400 customers (law firms and in-house teams) and more than 140,000 legal professionals.
  • More than half of the AmLaw 50 are customers, and the US is its largest market by revenue.
  • In-house legal teams were over 40% of new customers in Q3.

Legora says the money goes to expansion in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, and to new products including agentic intake, horizon scanning, and legal research. TechCrunch notes the raise comes about a month after rival Harvey raised $550 million at a $15.5 billion valuation.

Why legal AI matters for your business

Your law firm is probably already using this. When more than half of the largest US firms buy the same tool, AI-assisted contract review is the default, not the experiment. If your firm still bills five hours for a first-pass lease review, ask why.

Ask about billing before the next engagement. Three questions: Which tasks does AI draft? Do you bill for the AI-drafted time or the review time? Is my data used to train anything? A good firm has answers. A vague one is a pricing signal.

The in-house number is the real tell. Over 40% of new customers were in-house teams, and Legora lists an in-house SMB offering. Companies are bringing routine legal work inside: NDAs, vendor contracts, intake triage. If you sign the same five contract types every month, a templated workflow with AI review and a lawyer on escalation can cost less than the hourly route.

Keep a human on the signature line. AI drafts. A licensed attorney still owns the advice. Build the workflow so the expensive person sees only what needs judgment.

Key takeaways

  • Legora raised $550M at an $8.8B valuation on October 21, led by Atreides Management
  • The company reports ARR above $200M and more than 2,400 law firm and in-house customers
  • Over 40% of Q3 new customers were in-house legal teams
  • Rival Harvey raised $550M at $15.5B about a month earlier
  • Ask your law firm which work AI drafts and how that shows up on your invoice
  • Routine contracts are good candidates for an in-house AI workflow with attorney escalation

You don't need an $8.8B platform to stop paying hourly for the same NDA. We build contract intake and review workflows for small teams: your templates, AI first pass, and a clean hand-off to your attorney when it matters. Tell us what you sign every month, or estimate what the hours cost you now.
