Meloni files to trademark her voice: AI voice cloning defense

Italy's prime minister filed an EU trademark for her voice to fight AI voice cloning. What a sound mark does, what it can't, and how to protect your brand voice.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to the European Union Intellectual Property Office to trademark her voice, a move against AI voice cloning and deepfakes, AP reports. A head of government using trademark law as a deepfake shield tells you how thin the other tools still are. If your business has a recognizable voice, such as a founder on the radio ads or a jingle on hold music, that voice can be cloned this afternoon.

What actually happened

Per AP:

  • The filing, reported on October 5, contains a four-second recording of Meloni saying "Io sono Giorgia Meloni" ("I am Giorgia Meloni").
  • Italian media reported that an approved mark would not automatically stop AI imitations of her voice. It would give her an additional legal tool against unauthorized use.
  • Meloni already has a separate case in an Italian court against a person accused of making deepfake pornographic images of her.
  • AP places the filing alongside other public figures, including Matthew McConaughey, who has used trademark registrations for voice clips.

Why it matters for your business

A sound mark protects a brand signal, not a person. Trademarks cover marks used in commerce: a tagline as spoken, a jingle, a sign-off. If your audio identity sells products, ask your attorney whether it qualifies for registration. It will not stop a scammer, but it gives you a cleaner takedown claim against a copycat ad.

The bigger risk is fraud, not ads. A cloned owner's voice that calls your bookkeeper and asks for a "quick wire" costs more than any knockoff commercial. Trademarks do nothing there. Process does:

  • Callback rule. Any payment or bank-detail change requested by voice gets a callback to a number already on file. No exceptions for the boss.
  • Code word. Pick a phrase that never appears in public audio. Rotate it.
  • Two people on money moves. One requests, a different person approves, in a system that logs both.

Inventory your public audio. Podcasts, ads, voicemail greetings and webinar recordings are all training data for a clone. You don't have to delete them. Know what is out there and assume a copy of your voice exists.

Key takeaways

  • Giorgia Meloni filed an EU trademark application for a four-second clip of her voice
  • Even if approved, the mark will not automatically stop AI voice cloning; it adds a legal tool
  • A sound mark can protect a jingle or spoken tagline used to sell products
  • Voice-clone payment fraud is the bigger small-business risk, and process stops it, not trademarks
  • Use callbacks to known numbers, a private code word, and two-person approval on payments
