Meta: Claude tool tripped No Kings Instagram lockout. Use the API

Meta says a Claude-based tool reading Instagram at 4x normal speed triggered the No Kings lockout. AI agents on your business accounts can trip bot detection.

Meta says an AI tool built on Anthropic's Claude triggered the suspension of the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account on Saturday, during a weekend of nearly 3,000 events. The tool read profiles, posts and hashtags at about four times the normal rate, and Meta's security system decided it was a bot. Meta has apologized. The lesson for operators is simple: an AI agent working inside your business accounts looks like a bot to the platform, and the platform does not ask questions first.

What actually happened

From Bloomberg's report and The Next Web:

  • The lockout. Meta suspended the coalition's Instagram account on Saturday, October 17. The coalition says the page was down for about 90 minutes and organizers stayed locked out of admin access longer. Full access returned at 5:33 p.m. New York time.
  • The first explanation. On Saturday, Meta communications VP Andy Stone blamed unusually high rates of posting, sharing or commenting, and called the suspension clearly an error.
  • The revised explanation. On Sunday, Stone said Meta's engineers traced it to "reading" activity by a Claude-based tool. It hit profiles, posts and hashtags at about 4x the normal rate in short, intense bursts, a pattern that resembled automated bot traffic rather than a person browsing.
  • The recovery. An automated review about an hour later found the removal was wrong and restored the account.
  • The unknowns. Meta did not say which Claude tool it was, who ran it, or what it was doing. Bloomberg's report includes no statement from Anthropic.

Why it matters for your business

Every social platform, marketplace and bank runs abuse detection. Those systems score behavior, not intent. A browser agent that pulls 200 competitor posts in 90 seconds, checks every DM, or audits your hashtags in one burst has the same fingerprint as a scraper. The platform locks the account and sorts it out later.

For a small business, "later" is the problem. If Instagram is your storefront, a 90-minute lockout on a launch weekend is lost revenue. If admin access takes longer to restore, nobody can answer customers.

Here is what we tell clients who want agents near their accounts:

  • Use the official API, not a browser agent. Meta's Graph API, Shopify's Admin API and Amazon's SP-API have documented rate limits. Stay under them and you are a known app, not a suspicious user.
  • Throttle anything that browses. If an agent must use a logged-in browser, pace it like a human and cap the pages per session.
  • Know which vendors log in as you. Social schedulers, "AI growth" tools and research agents may all use your session. List them.
  • Keep a recovery path. Two admins, current 2FA backup codes, and a documented support route before you need it.

Key takeaways

  • Meta says a Claude-based tool reading Instagram at about 4x normal speed triggered the No Kings Coalition lockout
  • Meta has not said which tool it was or who ran it, and it changed its explanation once
  • Platform abuse systems judge request patterns, so a fast AI agent looks like a bot
  • Use official APIs with known rate limits instead of browser agents on your logins
  • Keep backup admins and 2FA recovery codes so a false lockout costs minutes, not days

Want agents working your accounts without getting them banned? We build automations on the official APIs, with rate limits, logs and a human approval step where it counts. See how we build it or tell us which accounts you want automated.
