Navana.ai's Rs 40 Cr round: on-prem is the product

Navana.ai raised Rs 40 crore for voice AI that runs inside the bank's own walls. The lesson: where the model runs is a feature you can sell, not just a checkbox.

Bengaluru-based Navana.ai raised a Rs 40 crore (about $4.2M) Series A led by Ronnie Screwvala, with Antler India, Sharad Sanghi, Sandeep Singhal and Paula Mariwala joining. The company sells on-premise voice AI to banks and lenders. Not voice AI with a compliance page. Voice AI that runs inside the customer's own infrastructure, which is the entire reason regulated buyers sign. That distinction is worth more attention than the round size.

What actually happened

Per Entrackr, the company was founded by brothers Raoul and Jai Nanavati and says it has processed more than 100 million voice AI minutes for BFSI customers including Bajaj Finserv, Protean, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, Jana Small Finance Bank, and Grihum Housing Finance.

The capital goes three places: more BFSI deployments, stronger speech models for Indian languages and dialects, and an AI contact centre plus an automated evaluation platform. The customer logos and the minutes figure are the company's own claims relayed through the round coverage — we would treat both as directional rather than audited.

Two of those three spend lines are the moat. Indian-language and dialect coverage is data nobody can buy off a shelf. On-premise deployment is an engineering commitment most voice AI vendors have deliberately avoided, because running your stack in somebody else's data centre is slow, unglamorous, and hard to scale.

Why this matters for your business

You are probably not selling into Indian banks. Take the architecture anyway, because where the model runs is now a product decision, not an IT detail — and most small firms have never made it deliberately.

The default is a hosted API, and the default is usually right. If you are transcribing marketing calls, use the API. Latency is better, the model improves without you doing anything, and you are not maintaining GPU capacity. Nobody should self-host to feel serious.

The default breaks the moment audio carries regulated content. Patient calls, loan applications, card numbers read aloud, anything a state privacy statute touches. At that point the buying question is not "is this vendor secure" but "does the audio ever leave our perimeter," and there are only two answers. Vendors who can say no win deals that vendors with a good security page cannot. That is what Navana is selling, and it is why a $4.2M round bought access to banks that far larger US voice vendors do not have.

The practical middle exists and is under-used. You do not have to choose between a public API and racking servers. Deploying an open-weights speech model into your own VPC gets you a defensible answer on data residency at a fraction of the operational load of true on-prem. For most small firms handling sensitive audio, that is the right rung on the ladder.

The pattern generalizes past voice. Every AI feature you ship has a deployment locus, and it is worth writing down which one you chose and why — before a customer's security questionnaire makes you improvise.
