Newegg checkout in Gemini and AI Mode: get your feed UCP-ready
Newegg now sells inside Gemini and Google AI Mode with UCP checkout and Google Pay. Here is what merchants need to get their own catalog buyable in AI chat.
Newegg just put its catalog inside Google's chat. On October 8, the retailer said U.S. shoppers can now buy eligible Newegg products in the Gemini app and in Google Search, including AI Mode, with checkout powered by Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The shopper asks, compares, and pays with Google Pay without opening newegg.com. If your products are not eligible for that flow, a competitor's will be.
What actually happened
Per Newegg's release on Business Wire:
- Checkout happens in the conversation. Shoppers pay through Google Pay inside AI Mode or Gemini.
- Newegg stays the merchant of record. It fulfills and supports every order. Google hosts the purchase, not the sale.
- The catalog is partial. Only "eligible" products are live, and Newegg says the set is growing.
Newegg CIO Montaque Hou put the strategy plainly: wherever someone asks an AI what to buy, Newegg wants to answer. The company already sells through the ChatGPT app directory and Perplexity's in-chat checkout, so Google is the third AI storefront, not the first.
Why it matters for your business: what UCP checkout on Google requires
Google's merchant help page for UCP checkout lists what it takes. The short version:
- Merchant Center is the gate. Only listings with the
native_commercecheckout-eligibility attribute show a Buy button. A messy product feed means no button. - Access is limited. It is open to select merchants through an interest form, rolling out in phases. Products are eligible in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
- Payments run through Google Pay. You need a Google Pay & Wallet Console account, and your payment processor must be integrated with the Google Pay API. You do not need a Google Pay button on your own site.
- You keep the customer. You stay the seller and merchant of record, so returns, fraud, and support are still yours.
This is the operator's lesson: in agentic commerce, your product feed is your storefront. Titles, GTINs, prices, stock, shipping times, and return policy need to be correct and machine-readable, because an agent will quote them to a buyer who never sees your site. If you run Shopify, UCP is the same protocol Shopify co-developed, and the Storefront MCP cart tools are already moving to it.
Key takeaways
- Newegg now sells eligible products inside Gemini and Google AI Mode with UCP checkout and Google Pay
- Newegg stays merchant of record and handles fulfillment and support
- Google's UCP checkout is limited to select merchants via an interest form, in the U.S., Canada, and Australia
- Only Merchant Center listings flagged checkout-eligible get a Buy button
- Clean up your feed now: accurate price, stock, shipping, and returns data is what the agent reads
