Nvidia buys into Cloverleaf: compute starts at a substation

Your AI compute bill does not start at a GPU. It starts at a utility interconnection agreement signed three years earlier. Nvidia just bought a piece of the company that signs them. On August 21 the chipmaker took a minority stake in Cloverleaf Infrastructure, a two-year-old developer whose entire business is locking up land that already has power attached to it.
What actually happened
Per TechCrunch and Data Center Dynamics, Nvidia acquired a minority position in Cloverleaf. Terms were not disclosed; the Wall Street Journal reported the figure at several hundred million dollars. Cloverleaf, founded in 2024 and backed by NGP Capital and Sandbrook Capital, negotiates power agreements with utilities and then sells the resulting "powered land" to data center developers. It has placed more than 7 gigawatts of such projects — including Wisconsin sites that ended up serving Oracle and OpenAI — and says its pipeline exceeds 10 GW.
As part of the deal Cloverleaf gets access to Nvidia DSX, Nvidia's platform for designing site, power, cooling, and compute layout together.
This is not an isolated move. Four days earlier Nvidia committed $1.5 billion to SB Energy for an Ohio campus leased to OpenAI, with capacity arriving progressively from 2028.
Why AI compute economics matter for your business
The bottleneck is electrical, not silicon. Nvidia is not investing here because chips are scarce. It is investing because the places to plug chips in are scarce, and the queue for a utility interconnect runs years. When your model vendor tells you capacity is tight, this is the layer they mean.
Read the dates on the announcements. SB Energy's Ohio capacity starts arriving in 2028. Cloverleaf's pipeline is measured in projects, not running racks. Anything you're told about cheaper inference "soon" is a forecast about construction schedules. Plan your 2027 budget against today's list prices, not against a press release.
Vertical integration cuts both ways. A vendor that finances the grid connection, designs the building, and sells the chips has fewer excuses for missing capacity — and more control over who gets it first. You are not in that queue. Your leverage is the ability to move: keep model calls behind an interface you own, keep prompts and evals in your repo, and treat provider choice as configuration.
Watch the circularity. Nvidia is deploying chip profits into the customers who buy chips. That works while demand holds. It also means a demand slowdown hits your vendor's balance sheet and its buildout at the same time. Keep AI contracts short enough to survive that.
