What actually happened
OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes, dated July 31, are three sentences long: "On August 30, 2026, we're retiring the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT." Download what you want to keep. Use ChatGPT Images to keep generating and editing.
The scope is narrow, and worth reading precisely:
- It's the official DALL·E GPT that goes — the first-party entry in the GPT directory.
- User-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected. If you built your own, it stands.
- The replacement is ChatGPT Images, the built-in surface for creating and editing images.
- This is a ChatGPT change. OpenAI's notes flag no API change here.
One thing OpenAI does not say: that your existing images get deleted. It says to download what you want to keep. That is a sentence you should not have to interpret on a deadline.
Why vendor sunsets matter for your business
The model was never the fragile part. The surface is. A GPT is a container — a prompt, some settings, and a scroll of outputs. When the container is retired, anything that only existed inside it is now your problem on someone else's schedule.

Generated images belong in object storage or a DAM you control, with the generating prompt stored alongside the file. The prompt is the source. The PNG is the build output. Keep the source and you can regenerate on any model; keep only the PNG and you're re-doing the work.
