OpenAI and America's SBDC: free AI training for small business
OpenAI and America's SBDC will train SBDC advisors and run AI workshops for 1,000+ small businesses, with free ChatGPT Plus. Bring one real workflow.
OpenAI and America's SBDC announced a small business AI training partnership on September 30. OpenAI Academy will train Small Business Development Center advisors, and those advisors will run hands-on workshops. The goal is to reach at least 1,000 small businesses in person, and more through one-on-one advising. People who complete a workshop get free ChatGPT Plus. Free training is worth your time. Go with a specific task, not a general curiosity.
What actually happened
Per America's SBDC's release, the pilot will roll out in phases over the coming months. The SBDC network serves about one million entrepreneurs each year. OpenAI's announcement says it will train about 150 advisors through its Community Trainer Program. The two groups will also co-develop playbooks and sector-specific material.
The release does not name the pilot states, and it does not say how long the free ChatGPT Plus access lasts. Ask your local SBDC before you plan around it.
OpenAI published supporting numbers in a same-day post. It says 4 million small-business employees used its tools in one week of September. It also says agentic use by small businesses doubled from April to August. Those are OpenAI's own figures, so treat them as a vendor's view of its own product.
Why the SBDC AI training matters for your business
SBDC advising is free, local and not tied to a sales quota. That is a better start than a webinar from a tool vendor. Note who the trainer is, though. The curriculum comes from OpenAI, and the free seat is ChatGPT. You will learn one vendor's tool well.
Use the workshop well:
Bring one workflow. Pick a task that costs you hours each week. Quotes, follow-up emails, supplier price checks and review replies are good candidates. Leave with that task done a new way.
Keep your data portable. Store prompts, templates and outputs in files and systems you own, not only in one chat history. Then a switch to Claude or Gemini costs you nothing.
Mind customer data. Know what you paste into any AI tool. A free plan does not change your obligations to your customers.
Measure it. Record how long the task took before and after. If the number does not move, the tool is a toy.
