Otter.ai raises $320M: your meeting notes are your data
Otter.ai took $320M from General Catalyst to push its AI meeting assistant into enterprise workflows. Own your transcripts before the notetaker owns your process.
Otter.ai, the AI meeting assistant that started as a transcription app, has raised $320 million from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. Before this, Otter had raised about $50 million in total over nearly a decade. The money is not the interesting part. The plan is: Otter wants to move from writing your meeting notes to running the work that comes out of them. If your sales calls, client check-ins, and team standups go through a notetaker, that notetaker is about to want a bigger role in your operations.
What actually happened
Per TechCrunch:
- The structure is not a normal equity round. General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund gives capital without diluting the company's equity. Its return is tied to the results of the company's marketing spend. In plain terms: this is money to buy customers.
- The stated uses: enterprise growth, go-to-market, international expansion, and product work.
- The numbers Otter shared: it passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue last year, and 40 million people have used the product to date, up from 25 million a year earlier. It did not share monthly active users or churn.
- The product direction: Otter is moving beyond transcription to workflow automation and enterprise integrations. It is testing a pre-brief feature that sends you context from earlier conversations before a meeting, and Live Assist, which lets you ask the assistant questions during a meeting.
- The market is crowded: TechCrunch lists Fireflies.ai, Granola, Read AI, Circleback, and others, plus Superhuman, which acquired Fathom.
Why an AI meeting assistant round matters for your business
Capital tied to marketing spend means a sales push. Expect more outreach, more enterprise bundles, and more pressure to standardize your team on one notetaker. That is fine if you pick it on purpose. It is a problem if you inherit it because three employees signed up for free.
Pre-brief means the tool reads your history. A feature that hands you context from past conversations works because the vendor keeps and indexes every call. For a small business, those transcripts hold pricing, client complaints, and staff issues. Know where they live, who can search them, and how long they are kept.
Transcripts are an asset, not exhaust. Your meeting notes are the best record of what customers asked for and what you promised. If they only exist inside one vendor's app, you cannot feed them to your CRM, your quoting tool, or your own agents. Check the export options and the API now, while switching is still cheap.
Workflow automation is where lock-in starts. Once the notetaker creates your tasks and updates your CRM, replacing it means rebuilding those flows. Keep the automation layer in a system you control, and let the notetaker be one input to it.
