Photon's $4.5M: iMessage and WhatsApp agents from one API

Photon raised $4.5M to ship AI agents over iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS and email from one API. Text is now a storefront. Own the logic behind the channel.

Photon, a San Francisco startup that helps developers put AI agents inside iMessage and WhatsApp, has $4.5M in seed funding, TechCrunch reported today. Last month it held an actual funeral for mobile apps, coffin included. The stunt is a joke. The bet is not: your customers already live in their text threads, and messaging agents now ship from one API.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch:

  • $4.5M round, co-led by Gradient and A*, with Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures and Karman participating
  • One unified API plus a channel framework, a CLI and an observability suite
  • Channels: iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS/RCS, email and voice
  • 40,000+ developer sign-ups, 10x revenue growth in four months, 5x message volume in the past month
  • The managed platform claims SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance
  • Free tier up to 10 users, three paid tiers above that
  • Customers named include Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Rho and Slashy

The "app funeral" ran September 17 in San Francisco and doubled as Photon's developer day, with panels from Vercel, Stripe and OpenAI. CEO Daniel Tian told TechCrunch the shift from apps to agents will take a while, but called it directionally inevitable.

Why messaging agents matter for your business

The text thread is the new checkout. We saw it when DoorDash put ordering inside iMessage. A local shop does not need an app. It needs a number customers can text "is the blue one back in stock?" and get a real answer, from real inventory.

One API is a convenience, not a strategy. A unified layer saves you from writing six integrations. It also makes Photon a single point of failure for every customer conversation you have. Keep your agent logic — prompts, tools, order lookups, refund rules — in your own service. Treat the messaging layer as a pipe you can swap.

Each channel has its own rules. WhatsApp has template and opt-in policies. SMS has carrier registration. A vendor abstracts the API, not your compliance. Log consent per channel before the first outbound message.

Key takeaways

  • Photon raised $4.5M, co-led by Gradient and A*, with Vercel participating
  • One API covers iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS/RCS, email and voice
  • 40,000+ developer sign-ups and 10x revenue growth in four months, per TechCrunch
  • Free tier up to 10 users; SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA on the managed platform
  • Keep agent logic in your own code so the messaging vendor stays swappable
  • Channel compliance (opt-in, templates, carrier registration) is still your job

Want customers to text your store and get a real answer? We build messaging agents wired to your actual inventory and order data, with the logic in code you own. See what we build or tell us your busiest question.
