Roblox standalone apps: the engine leaves the platform
At RDC 2026 Roblox opened standalone app builds, browser play, and a real-money creator Wallet. The unbundling lesson for anyone building on someone else's platform.
Roblox spent twenty years being a walled garden that owned the engine, the audience, and the money. On September 11 at its developers conference, it started handing two of those three back. Creators can now ship standalone apps on mobile, PC, and consoles running the Roblox engine, and a Roblox Wallet will pay them in real currency instead of Robux. That is a platform voluntarily unbundling itself, which is rare enough to be worth reading closely.
What actually happened
From Roblox's RDC press release:
Roblox Everywhere. Creators can publish games as standalone apps across mobile, PC, and consoles, with the Roblox engine underneath. In-browser play on Chrome arrives by the end of 2026 through the Experience Details Page. Offline modes are coming, so a session can survive a dead connection.
Build goes wider. The prompt-to-game tool, previously a New Zealand-only alpha, opens public alpha in Serbia and Singapore and adds desktop. Roblox says roughly 9,000 games have been published through Build, and that 71% of Build users had never opened Roblox Studio. That second number is the actual product result: the tool recruited people the IDE could not.
Roblox Wallet. Real-money earnings with automatic daily payouts and transfers to outside bank accounts, rolling out late 2026 to eligible US independent creators 18 and over, with Airwallex US, LLC as the financial partner. A Roblox Card follows in 2027. Context for the money: creators earned $1.7 billion in the past 12 months and more than $5 billion since 2013, against 29 billion player hours last quarter.
Engine work. 2D support with an orthographic camera, animated image containers, direct sprite-sheet import, and NPCs that can playtest a game for you.
The release does not state the revenue terms for standalone apps — no split, no handling of Apple and Google store fees. TechCrunch covered the same gap. Distribution moved; the economics have not been published.
Why platform unbundling matters for your business
You probably do not ship Roblox games. The pattern still applies to anyone whose revenue runs through a platform they do not own.
Portability announcements are not portability until the terms are public. "You can now run this outside our walls" is a headline. The question is what percentage follows you out the door, and who eats the 30% app-store cut. Until that is written down, treat the escape hatch as a roadmap item, not a plan. We apply the same test to AI vendor lock-in: the license matters more than the launch post.
Getting paid in real currency is a bigger deal than the engine news. Robux earnings meant your business ran on scrip whose exchange rate the platform set. Daily payouts to a bank account you control is a different relationship — and notice Roblox needed a licensed partner to do it. If your own product holds customer funds, or delays payouts, or denominates in points, understand that you are running a financial service and it eventually gets regulated like one.
The Build number is the lesson for your own tooling. 71% of users of the prompt-based builder had never touched the professional IDE. The AI interface did not make expert users faster; it made non-users into users. That is where prompt-driven tools pay for themselves in a small business too — not replacing the person who already knows the system, but letting the five people who never learned it do the work themselves.
The honest summary: Roblox made its platform more valuable to creators while keeping the part that matters most, which is the audience. Twenty-nine billion hours a quarter is the moat. Everything announced is downstream of it.

An escape hatch you have not tested is not an escape hatch. We build systems where the customer list, the order data, and the payment rails stay yours, so a platform's terms change is an inconvenience instead of an outage.
