SAP TechEd 2026: AI gateway, Joule Studio free till December

SAP TechEd 2026 adds an Enterprise AI Gateway, Joule Studio spend tracking and MCP/A2A agent access. Runtime is free through December 2026. Meter it now.

SAP wants to be the control plane for every AI agent that touches your ERP. At SAP TechEd 2026 in Berlin today, the company announced an SAP Enterprise AI Gateway, new spend and behavior tracking in Joule Studio, and a governed path for outside agents to call SAP's own agents over MCP and A2A. There is also a free offer: select customers can run custom agents on SAP's runtime at no charge through December 2026. Free with an end date is a pricing event. Plan for it.

What actually happened

From SAP's TechEd press release:

  • SAP Enterprise AI Gateway. A planned single point to manage AI traffic across the company: authentication, policy enforcement, routing, monitoring, usage tracking and auditing. SAP gave no availability date.
  • Joule Studio controls. New observability and admin features that show agent behavior, model use and spend. Builders can pick from more than 70 AI models.
  • n8n inside Joule Studio. Customers in the early adopter program can design and run n8n workflows there. Wider availability is planned, with no date.
  • Joule Work over open protocols. Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, plus a governed gateway that lets third-party agents invoke Joule Agents with access control.
  • The pricing. Running custom agents on the SAP-managed runtime stays free through December 2026 for "select customers." Building and testing agents and n8n workflows stays free under fair-use limits. No list prices were published.

The same release covers new tabular models (SAP-RPT-2.0 and a time-series variant, SAP-RPT-TS) and deeper Databricks integration in SAP Business Data Cloud.

Why it matters for your business

Two things here are real, and one is a trap.

The real part: MCP and A2A on SAP means your non-SAP agents, the ones in your support desk or your Shopify back office, can call SAP through a governed door instead of a screen scraper. And a central AI gateway with per-agent usage tracking is the right pattern. Every business running more than two agents needs one, SAP or not.

The trap: "free through December" with no published price after. Agents you deploy in November will have a bill in January, and you do not know the rate yet.

What we would do:

  1. Meter now. Log tokens, calls and model per agent from day one, even while it is free. That is your baseline when the invoice arrives.
  2. Keep the logic portable. Put business rules in your own code or n8n, and call SAP over MCP. If the price is wrong, you move the runtime, not the workflow.
  3. Do not wait on the gateway. It has no date. If you need routing and spend caps this quarter, a self-hosted gateway does it today.

Key takeaways

  • SAP announced an Enterprise AI Gateway for auth, routing, usage tracking and audit; no ship date
  • Joule Studio adds spend and behavior tracking, 70+ models, and n8n for early adopters
  • Outside agents can call Joule Agents over MCP and A2A through a governed gateway
  • Custom agent runtime is free through December 2026 for select customers; no list price yet
  • Meter every agent now and keep workflow logic outside the vendor runtime

Free runtimes end. Your workflows should not. We build agent systems with the logic in code you own and per-agent cost tracking from day one, so a vendor price change is a config edit. See how we build, or run the numbers on an agent first.
