Shop Pay for AI agents goes beyond Shopify stores
Shopify is working with Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover so AI agents can pay with Shop Pay at any merchant using agentic tokens. What sellers should know.
Shop Pay for AI agents is leaving the Shopify walls. On October 28, Shopify VP of product Rohit Mishra said Shopify is working with Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover so buyers can use Shop Pay inside AI agents "at any merchant, whether it runs on Shopify or not." The agent never sees the card number. That makes the wallet, not the storefront, the thing an agent checks out with.
What actually happened
Mishra announced it on X, and PYMNTS reported that Shopify has built the card networks' agentic payment technology into Shop Pay. Here is what's confirmed:
- Agentic tokens replace the card. The networks issue a stand-in credential that an authorized agent uses to pay. Per Mishra, buyers keep their rewards and fraud protection.
- Four networks named. Mishra's post names all four; press coverage describes Visa, Mastercard and Amex technology. Nothing public says which networks are live today.
- A different bet than Stripe. PYMNTS, citing The Information, says the approach runs counter to Stripe's habit of issuing a single-use virtual card for agents, which card networks reportedly dislike because it weakens their view of who bought what.
- It builds on last month's move. Shopify already lets browser agents check out on eligible Shopify merchants' sites.
What isn't public yet: fees, a go-live date, and what a non-Shopify merchant has to integrate to accept it. We won't guess. Watch Shopify's developer changelog for the spec.
Why it matters for your business
If you sell outside Shopify (WooCommerce, BigCommerce, custom), this is the first sign that Shop Pay's saved checkout could reach your customers through agents without a platform move. If you're on Shopify, it means your competitors may get the same agent-side checkout you have.
Either way, the agent picks the wallet and the networks hold the token. Your job is to be the store the agent can actually buy from:
- Make your catalog machine-readable. Clean product data, real stock, real shipping times. Agents skip stores they can't parse.
- Accept network tokenized payments through your processor. Ask them directly about Visa and Mastercard agentic tokens.
- Write your rules for agent orders: order caps, fraud review, refund paths. Write them before the first agent order arrives.
Key takeaways
- Shopify is working with Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover to let AI agents pay with Shop Pay at any merchant (announced Oct 28, 2026)
- Agentic tokens stand in for the card, so the agent never sees the number and buyers keep rewards and protections
- Fees, launch date and non-Shopify integration details are not public yet
- For your business: get your catalog agent-readable and ask your processor about network agentic tokens now
