Shopify sunsets additional scripts August 26: move your pixels

Shopify's checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts sunset for non-Plus stores on August 26, 2026. Unmigrated Thank you and Order status pages get auto-upgraded.

If you run a Shopify store on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced, August 26, 2026 is the day your Thank you and Order status pages stop being yours to script. checkout.liquid, the Additional Scripts box, and script tags on those pages sunset for every non-Plus plan. Plus stores went through this on August 28, 2025. This is the second wave, and it lands in three days.

What actually happened

Per Shopify's checkout.liquid documentation, checkout.liquid is already unsupported for the Information, Shipping, and Payment steps. The Thank you and Order status pages were the holdout. Their sunset date for non-Plus stores is August 26, 2026, and script tags on those pages sunset on the same schedule.

Shopify's non-Plus upgrade guide is explicit about the failure mode: if you don't upgrade before the date, your Thank you and Order status pages get auto-upgraded for you. Incompatible customizations don't survive that. The replacement paths are web pixels for tracking (Settings → Customer events), checkout UI extensions for interface changes, and app blocks in the checkout and accounts editor.

The practical risk is the Additional Scripts field specifically. That box is where a decade of merchants pasted GA4 and Google Tag Manager snippets, Meta Pixel purchase events, affiliate postbacks, and survey widgets. Those don't move themselves. Anything still living there is a conversion event that stops firing without an error message anywhere in your admin.

Why the Shopify checkout deadline matters for your business

Broken attribution looks exactly like a bad month. A purchase pixel that stops reporting doesn't throw a 500. Your orders keep landing, your Shopify revenue number stays right, and your ad platforms simply see fewer conversions. Then someone pauses a campaign that was working. The gap between "the tracking broke" and "the channel died" is the entire ad budget for whoever notices in October instead of August.

Do the audit today, not the migration. Open Settings → Checkout, read what is actually in Additional Scripts, and write down each snippet and what it does. Most stores find three to six things, half of which duplicate an app they already installed. Migrate the ones that still earn their place into web pixels and delete the rest. That is an afternoon, not a project.

Then verify with real orders. Place a test order after you migrate and confirm the purchase event lands in GA4 and Meta Events Manager with the right value and currency. Web pixels run in a sandbox and do not get the same DOM access the old scripts had, so a snippet that scraped the confirmation page for an order total needs rewriting against the pixel API, not copy-pasting.

And note the pattern. This is a platform deprecation with a hard date, no grace period, and an automatic migration that runs whether you're ready or not. Any tracking you cannot reproduce from your own data is tracking you are renting.

Key takeaways

  • checkout.liquid, Additional Scripts, and script tags sunset on Thank you and Order status pages for non-Plus stores on August 26, 2026
  • Plus stores hit this on August 28, 2025 — this wave is Basic, Shopify, and Advanced
  • Unmigrated pages are auto-upgraded, and incompatible customizations are dropped
  • Replacements: web pixels for tracking, checkout UI extensions and app blocks for interface
  • Web pixels run sandboxed — scripts that read the confirmation page DOM need rewriting, not porting
  • Place a test order and confirm purchase events land in GA4 and Meta before you call it done

Attribution you can't reproduce isn't attribution. We audit what's in your checkout, port the events that matter into web pixels, and prove them with real orders before the deadline. Send us your Additional Scripts box, or see how we handle platform migrations.
