Shopify AI traffic tripled. Structured data converts 2x.

Shopify says AI-referred traffic and orders tripled in Q2 2026, and AI search reading its catalog converts twice as well as AI search reading scraped pages.

When we wrote up Shopify's Q2 print this morning, we noted the press release didn't put a single number on AI adoption. The earnings call did, and the numbers are the most useful thing Shopify has said about AI search all year: AI-referred traffic and orders both tripled year over year, and structured catalog data converts at twice the rate of scraped product data.

What actually happened

On the Q2 2026 call, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein put hard figures behind the agentic commerce talk. Per TechCrunch and PYMNTS:

  • AI-referred traffic and orders tripled year over year in Q2.
  • New buyer orders from AI channels arrive at nearly twice the rate of other channels.
  • Half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product description page — 2.5x the rate of traditional search sessions.
  • 75% of AI-attributed purchases came from outside the top 100 product categories.
  • AI search running against Shopify's catalog converts at twice the rate of AI search relying on scraped product data.
  • Sidekick handled nearly 34 million merchant conversations, with daily active merchant use up 3.6x; merchants built 36,000+ custom apps with it, up from 12,000 in Q1.

Finkelstein's framing was that AI agents make repeated calls into the catalog and work with richer structured data to match products to intent. Traditional search sessions didn't collapse — they still run about a third of storefront sessions. This is addition, not substitution. Yet.

Why AI search matters for your business

The 2x conversion gap is the whole post. Same shopper, same agent, same product — the difference is whether the agent read a clean feed or guessed from your HTML. Scraping gets your title and a price. A structured catalog gets variants, stock, dimensions, materials, return policy, and lead time. Agents answer specific questions; ambiguity is a lost sale you never see in analytics.

The long tail is where AI buyers are. 75% of AI-attributed purchases fell outside the top 100 categories. Head terms were never winnable for a small catalog. Specific ones are — and specificity lives in product attributes, not in your homepage copy.

No-homepage traffic changes what you optimize. If half of AI sessions land straight on a PDP, your PDP is now the landing page, the ad, and the sales rep. Trust signals, shipping math, and stock truth have to be on that page, not two clicks away.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify Q2 2026: AI-referred traffic and orders both tripled year over year
  • AI search on structured catalog data converts 2x better than AI search on scraped pages
  • Half of AI-referred sessions land straight on a product page, 2.5x traditional search
  • 75% of AI-attributed purchases came from outside the top 100 categories — the tail is live
  • Audit your attribute completeness before you buy another dollar of traffic

Your product feed is now a conversion surface, not a compliance chore. We build structured catalog pipelines and agent-readable product data that stay yours if you ever leave the platform. See how we do it, or send us your current feed and we'll tell you what an agent can't answer.
