Shopify Canvas: Sidekick builds your store, edit a copy first

Shopify Canvas lets Sidekick redesign your whole store by chat. Canvas-edited themes stop getting theme updates and lose app blocks. Edit a copy first.

Shopify Canvas turns your theme into a chat window. Shopify launched Canvas today: a new design surface where merchants build and redesign their store by talking to Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent. You see every page at once, click any detail, or just describe what you want. Shopify says an entrepreneur can now build a fully custom store in twenty minutes. That part is real. The fine print is where your next six months live.

What actually happened

Per Shopify's announcement, Canvas lays out every page of a store in one workspace. You pan across it, zoom in, and edit directly or through Sidekick. It is not a mockup — it renders the real theme code, so you can test interactivity, animation, and different screen sizes. Sidekick edits the theme files, validates its code, and reviews screenshots before it shows you a result. Shopify says it simplified its theme architecture so Sidekick can read and change structure, logic, and design, and that Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026.

Canvas is rolling out over the coming days and does not replace the existing editor yet. TechCrunch reports it is desktop-only at launch.

Why Shopify Canvas matters for your business

The Canvas requirements page is the document to read, not the launch post. The lines that matter:

  • A theme you edit in Canvas doesn't receive theme updates. Your design forks from the vendor the moment Sidekick touches it. Bug fixes and new features from the theme author stop arriving.
  • No third-party themes. Canvas works only with Shopify-built themes and custom themes. If you paid for a Theme Store theme, Canvas won't open it yet.
  • No app blocks or app embeds. Reviews widgets, subscription blocks, loyalty embeds — you can't add or configure them in Canvas.
  • No per-market customization, no direct translation (Translate & Adapt still does that), and you can't download theme files after a Canvas edit.
  • Staff need the Edit code permission to use it.

None of that makes Canvas bad. It makes Canvas a fork, and forks need an owner. A chat-built redesign that looks great on Tuesday becomes a theme nobody patches by spring. The merchants who win here treat Canvas as a fast prototyping tool on a duplicate theme, then decide on purpose what goes live.

Shopify also told theme developers that full third-party compatibility comes before Canvas becomes the default editor. Read that as: default is the plan.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify Canvas launched October 1 and rolls out over the coming days; Sidekick edits real theme code from chat
  • Canvas-edited themes stop receiving theme updates — your design becomes a fork you maintain
  • Third-party themes, app blocks, app embeds, and per-market customization are not supported yet
  • Always duplicate your live theme before letting Sidekick redesign it
  • Shopify plans to make Canvas the default editor once third-party themes are compatible

Twenty minutes to build a store is the easy part. Owning it for two years is the job. We take Canvas prototypes and turn them into a maintained custom theme — app integrations wired back in, markets handled, version control on every change. See how we build Shopify stores you own, or send us your Canvas draft and we'll tell you what breaks before launch.
