Shopify's Shop app holiday push: whose customer is it?
Shopify is running its first long multiphase holiday campaign for the Shop app after native GMV grew over 70% in Q2. Here's the merchant-side read on that channel.
Shopify is about to spend real money teaching consumers to shop in the Shop app instead of on your storefront. The campaign runs from now through December in phases — the first time the company has pushed the app this hard into a holiday season. If you sell on Shopify, this is a channel decision disguised as a marketing announcement, and it is worth thinking about before Black Friday, not after.
What actually happened
Per Retail Brew, Shopify VP of consumer marketing Jess Jacobs described a "multiphase holiday period during a much longer window than previous" years — a deliberate structure so the campaign is not repeating one message from August to December. Shopifreaks reports the same framing and calls it a first for the app.
The numbers behind the spend, as reported by both outlets from Shopify's Q2 disclosures: Shop's native GMV grew more than 70% in Q2, with Cart Sync — the feature that pulls a shopper's cart from your store into the Shop app — responsible for over 30% of that. The app, which started life in 2020 as a package tracker, now carries AI search and Shop Posts, a shoppable feed format that reads like Reels.
Retail Brew quotes Shopify President Harley Finkelstein calling the Shop app one of "two major legs of our stool for the future," the other being agentic AI. That is not a side project. That is the roadmap.
Why the Shop app matters for your business
Note what Cart Sync actually does. A shopper builds a cart on your site and finishes in Shopify's app. The order is still yours. The habit is not. Repeat that a few hundred times over a holiday season and the next purchase starts in the Shop feed, next to a competitor selling the same category.
We are not telling anyone to opt out. Shopify is putting distribution behind this, and distribution is the scarcest thing a small catalog has. But run it as a marketplace, because that is what it is. Marketplaces are worth being on and dangerous to depend on — ask anyone whose business was 80% Amazon in 2019.
The practical move is unglamorous: make sure the channels you own can survive the app getting good. Your email and SMS list, your post-purchase flow, your product data. Every order that arrives through Shop should still end with a customer you can reach without paying anyone. If your only re-engagement path is a platform notification, you have rented the relationship.
Key takeaways
- Shopify runs its first long multiphase holiday campaign for the Shop app, August through December
- Shop native GMV grew over 70% in Q2; Cart Sync drove more than 30% of that
- Cart Sync moves checkout — and the repeat-purchase habit — into Shopify's app, not yours
- Treat Shop like a marketplace: worth being on, dangerous to depend on
- Capture email and SMS consent on every Shop-sourced order so re-engagement isn't platform-gated
A channel you don't own is a channel that can reprice you. We build the owned layer underneath platform demand — customer data you keep, lifecycle flows that fire on your infrastructure, and product data that travels. See what we build, or tell us where your repeat orders currently come from.
