Shopify Shop skill: personal AI agents now accept your policies

Shopify's Shop skill lets personal AI agents like OpenClaw and Hermes buy with Shop Pay, even within a set budget. Your return policy is now the contract.

A customer's AI agent can now read your return policy, accept it for them, and pay. Shopify's Shop skill lets personal AI agents such as OpenClaw and Hermes search products, build checkouts and place orders through a shopper's Shop account. Last month Shop Pay shipped inside Meta's Muse. This goes wider: any shopper can connect the agent they already use. For merchants, the important line is in Shop's own help center, and it is about your policies, not the AI.

What actually happened

Shop's help center page on personal agents says a connected agent can search for products, prepare checkouts, place orders after approval, reorder past items, track orders and check a store's return policy. It names OpenClaw and Hermes as personal agents and Meta's Muse as a platform you can connect a Shop account to.

The default is human approval: the agent prepares a checkout with the shopper's details filled in, and the shopper approves every purchase. But there is an optional setting, "Allow agent to pay for me," with a weekly, monthly or total budget. Inside that budget, the agent pays without asking.

The skill itself is published by Shopify on ClawHub as @shopify/shop. It filters catalog search by size, color, price and delivery destination, builds carts with exact variant IDs, and prefers Shop/UCP checkout when a store supports it.

Two lines from the help center change the merchant math:

  • Agents agree to a store's shipping, refund, return and cancellation policies on the shopper's behalf. Shop tells shoppers to avoid stores whose policies they would not accept.
  • Shoppers are responsible for purchases made within their budget, even if the agent misunderstood them, and disputes over those may not succeed. The store stays responsible for fulfillment, returns, refunds and support.

Why the Shop skill matters for your business

Your policy pages used to be legal cover nobody read. Now software reads them before the sale, and a human may never see them at all. Then the human gets a box they did not expect, and your return policy is the only contract in the room.

What we would do this week:

  • Rewrite policies in plain, specific terms. "30 days, unworn, free return label" beats three paragraphs of legal text. An agent has to parse it; a vague policy may get you filtered out.
  • Fix variant data. The skill builds carts with exact variant IDs. Wrong size or color mapping means a wrong order you will eat.
  • Check that Shop Pay is on. Agent checkout runs through Shop Pay and the Shop account. No Shop Pay, fewer agent orders.
  • Watch returns by channel. If agent orders return more, you want to know before the holidays, not after.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify's Shop skill lets personal AI agents like OpenClaw and Hermes search, check out and track orders
  • Default is approval per purchase; an optional budget lets agents pay without asking
  • Agents accept your shipping, refund, return and cancellation policies on the shopper's behalf
  • Shoppers own in-budget purchases even when the agent misunderstands, so your policy carries the dispute
  • Make policies plain, variant data exact, and Shop Pay active

We make Shopify stores agent-ready. Clean variant data, policies a machine can parse, and reporting that splits agent orders from human ones. See our Shopify work.
