Shopify Tax now uses your fulfillment location as tax origin
Shopify Tax is now compatible with order routing: US tax is calculated from the fulfillment location that routing picks, and orders record the ship-from used. What to check.
If you ship from more than one place, Shopify Tax just changed which address it does math from. As of August 24, US orders are taxed using the fulfillment location your order routing settings pick for that specific order — not one blanket origin for the whole store. Local pickup calculates from the pickup location. Small change, and it lands directly in your filing spreadsheet.
What actually happened
Shopify shipped Shopify Tax compatibility with order routing. For orders delivered to US customers, tax is now calculated from the fulfillment location that routing selects per order. If you run multiple fulfillment centers, the calculation follows the real shipping origin instead of a store-level default. The order record now shows the ship-from location that was used.
That last part is the operationally useful bit. Until now, reconciling a return or an audit question meant inferring the origin from the fulfillment record and hoping it matched what the tax engine assumed. Now it is written on the order.
This follows an August 13 change where taxes recalculate automatically when you edit an order's shipping address, with a preview of the new amounts before you save. Between the two, Shopify closed the two most common ways a merchant's tax records drifted from what actually happened.
Why fulfillment-based tax origin matters for your business
Your routing rules are now tax rules. A rule that sends an order to whichever warehouse has stock is now also deciding which jurisdiction's origin rate applies. Nobody wrote it down that way. Go look at your routing priorities and confirm the person who set them knows they moved.
Check your locations before you check your rates. Shopify's US tax reference is explicit that if inventory ships from an address different from the one in your admin, you need a location record for it — that address is what determines nexus. A 3PL you never added as a location has been quietly wrong the whole time, and it is wrong in a more visible way now.
Expect a seam in your reports. Orders before August 24 used the old origin; orders after use routing. If you file by month, that boundary sits mid-period. Pull a sample from both sides now, while it is a five-minute check instead of a question from an auditor.
- As of August 24, 2026, US Shopify Tax calculates from the fulfillment location order routing selects per order
- Local pickup orders calculate from the pickup location
- Orders now record the ship-from location used in the calculation
- Every real shipping origin, 3PLs included, needs a location record — that address drives nexus
- Sample orders on both sides of August 24 before your next filing
Routing, tax, and reporting should agree without anyone reconciling by hand. We build the operations layer under Shopify stores — routing logic, exports, and reports that match what shipped. See what we have built.
