SoundHound and LG put restaurant ordering on 20M smart TVs
SoundHound AI and LG will enable restaurant ordering and checkout on about 20 million US LG smart TVs with no new hardware. What a restaurant should check first.
SoundHound and LG are turning the smart TV into a restaurant ordering channel. On November 3 the two companies announced a partnership to let merchants take transactions on roughly 20 million LG smart TVs in the United States. Restaurants go first. Retail and other categories follow. If you run a restaurant, this is one more screen between you and the person who wants your food, and the fine print is not public yet.
What actually happened
From the release and Investing.com's summary of it:
- Footprint. About 20 million LG smart TVs in the US at launch.
- Supply side. SoundHound says its merchant network already covers more than 15,000 restaurant locations, and it named Jersey Mike's, Five Guys and White Castle.
- Plumbing. SoundHound's existing network handles transaction routing and checkout. The release says restaurants need no new in-store hardware and that orders flow into existing point-of-sale and kitchen systems.
- Roadmap. SoundHound says it plans to bring its hospitality, travel, entertainment and banking brands to the devices it powers over time. CEO Keyvan Mohajer called the TV a "highly untapped opportunity for commerce."
What the release does not say: a launch date, the fee a restaurant pays per order, how an independent restaurant signs up, or which LG platform carries the experience. We also saw conflicting reports about SoundHound's stock move on the day and left them out. We will update when the commercial terms are public.
Why it matters for your business
Every new ordering surface in the last decade has followed the same arc. It shows up as free reach. It becomes a line item. Then it owns the customer record. Third-party delivery apps did it. Voice assistants tried. A TV channel with 20 million screens and a merchant network that already routes payments has a real shot.
The gate is integration, not marketing. The release says orders land in your POS and kitchen display without new hardware. That is only true if your POS exposes a clean API and your menu is structured data with modifiers, prices and availability that match what the kitchen can make right now. If your menu lives in a PDF and your POS vendor charges for every integration, you are not "no new hardware." You are a six-week project.
Before you sign anything with SoundHound, LG or whoever resells this to independents:
- Get the per-order fee and the settlement terms in writing. Compare them to your delivery-app take rate.
- Confirm you receive the customer's name and contact, not a platform ID.
- Make your menu a single source of truth that feeds your website, your kiosks and this channel from one place.
Key takeaways
- SoundHound and LG will enable restaurant ordering and checkout on about 20 million US LG smart TVs
- SoundHound's network already serves 15,000+ restaurant locations, including Jersey Mike's, Five Guys and White Castle
- No pricing, launch date or sign-up path for independents has been published
- The real requirement is a POS with an API and a structured menu, not new hardware
- Negotiate fees and customer-data access before the channel becomes a line item
One menu, every channel. We build menu and POS integrations that push the same structured data to your site, your kiosks and whichever new screen shows up next, so you are not rebuilding for each partner. Run the numbers on a new channel in our ROI calculator or see how we wire it up.
