Stripe Link agent purchases up 38x. Tag your agent orders

Stripe Link data shows AI agent purchases up 38x in September, with about 200 agents now paying through Link. Here is how to track agent orders in your store.

AI agents are buying real things with real money, and the curve just got steep. Stripe shared Link data with Upstarts Media covering about 70 AI assistants, and the report says agent purchases through Link grew 38x in September while payment volume grew 20x, mostly in retail. Agentic commerce is no longer a demo. If you sell online, some of your orders may already come from an agent, and most stores cannot tell which ones.

What actually happened

From Upstarts Media's report, based on Stripe data shared exclusively with the outlet:

  • The growth. Upstarts reports agentic transactions through Link rose 38x and payment volume rose 20x in September, led by retail. The full category and order-size breakdown is behind a paywall, so we are not repeating figures we could not read.
  • The agents. Dan Hill, Stripe's head of consumer product for Link, says Link now powers about 200 AI agents, more than double the roughly 70 in the September data. Instinct, Muse and Grok Bot are among the agents buying on users' behalf.
  • The scale. Link has about 300 million users overall. Agents are still a small share. Anthropic and OpenAI use Link, but not yet for agentic commerce.
  • The quote. Hill says the volume "is becoming very material."

On the merchant side, Stripe turned on WebMCP across all Stripe Checkout pages in September. In Stripe's tests, agents used 42% fewer tokens and 38% fewer tool calls, and finished checkout 39% faster. Stripe says merchants get this without changing their integration.

Why it matters for your business

A 38x jump from a small base is still small. But it tells you the direction, and it tells you the plumbing works. Agents can now find a product, fill a cart and pay. The question for you is whether you can see it happen.

Most store analytics assume a human with a browser. Agent orders blur your funnel: no product-page dwell time, no ad click, sometimes no email capture. If you can't separate them, your conversion rate, return rate and fraud rules drift and nobody knows why.

What we set up for clients:

  • Tag the channel. Flag orders that arrive through agent wallets, agent user agents or MCP checkout tools, and report them as their own channel.
  • Watch returns and disputes by channel. Agents pick the wrong size too. Know if agent orders return at a different rate.
  • Make the catalog machine-readable. Clean titles, real variant data and accurate stock. An agent can't buy what it can't parse.
  • Check your fraud rules. Make sure they don't silently decline legitimate agent checkouts.

Key takeaways

  • Upstarts Media reports Stripe Link agent transactions rose 38x and payment volume 20x in September, mostly retail
  • About 200 AI agents now pay through Link, up from roughly 70 in the September data
  • Stripe Checkout supports WebMCP, so agents can buy from Stripe merchants with no integration change
  • Most store analytics can't separate agent orders from human ones
  • Tag agent orders as a channel and track their returns, disputes and fraud declines

Do you know how many of last month's orders came from an agent? We build the order tagging, reporting and catalog cleanup that make agent sales visible and measurable. See our commerce work or run the numbers on your store.
