Vercel Shop GA: an open-source Shopify storefront for AI agents

Vercel Shop is a GA open-source Next.js storefront for Shopify with UCP and MCP so AI agents can search, cart, and check out. What it means for your store.

Vercel and Shopify just made AI agents a supported customer type. Vercel Shop, an open-source Next.js storefront template for Shopify, is now generally available, and it ships with tools that let AI agents search your catalog, build a cart, and hand off to checkout. For a Shopify merchant, the question is no longer whether agents will shop your store. It is whether your storefront can answer them.

What actually happened

Vercel's October 16 announcement lays out the pieces:

  • The template: an open-source Next.js storefront (github.com/vercel/shop) built on Shopify's rebuilt Hydrogen SDK, which handles catalog, cart, orders, payments, and checkout. The Hydrogen rebuild is also now GA.
  • Pages for two readers: each product URL serves a normal page to people and structured data (price, availability, options) to agents. The same data is in the page markup and sitemaps for search and answer engines.
  • UCP over MCP: the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed by Shopify, lets agents search, read product details, check stock, build a cart, and get a checkout link. Agents reach it through MCP at the merchant's own domain, without scraping the site.
  • A built-in assistant: a shopping assistant shares one cart with the regular browsing flow.
  • Checkout stays on Shopify: agents get a checkout link, and payment runs on Shopify's infrastructure.

Setup is one command: pnpm create next-app@latest my-store --example https://github.com/vercel/shop, then connect your Shopify store. Vercel did not list pricing for the template in the post. You pay for hosting and Shopify as usual.

Why agentic commerce matters for your business

Your product data is your storefront now. An agent does not see your hero image. It reads price, stock, and variants. If your Shopify catalog has empty fields, vague titles, or wrong inventory, the agent will skip you or quote the wrong thing. Clean data is the cheapest upgrade available.

Headless is a commitment. A Next.js storefront gives you speed and control, and it also gives you a codebase to maintain. If you run one store with a stock theme, the question is whether agent traffic justifies that cost yet. For many merchants, cleaning the catalog in a theme is the right first step.

Keep checkout where the fraud tools are. Vercel Shop sends agents to Shopify checkout instead of rebuilding payments. That is the right pattern. Do not let any agent integration bypass your checkout rules.

Key takeaways

  • Vercel Shop is a GA, open-source Next.js storefront template for Shopify
  • Agents use UCP over MCP to search, check stock, build carts, and get checkout links
  • Product pages serve structured data to agents and normal pages to people
  • Checkout still runs on Shopify, so your payment and fraud settings still apply
  • Fix titles, variants, and inventory accuracy before you add any agent channel

Thinking about a headless Shopify build? We build Next.js storefronts on code you own, and we tell you when a theme is the better call. See the commerce work we've shipped, or run the numbers on a rebuild first.
